Hey guys,

Just went to pick up my wife after she went for dinner with a friend.

Car said -6.5C and it's generally pretty accurate so I was being careful. All the roads I drove on were gritted.

First of all I had the DSC coming on very easily when pulling away, so I knew it was slippery! I drive a rear wheel drive BMW by the way.

I pulled away from the traffic lights to turn right, and pulled away in 2nd, all was okay. Then came up to the big roundabout, round round it very slowly and it was all sparkly, and as I tapped the power just a tiny bit, the car went completely sideways!!!! DSC caught it straight away and pulled it back into line, but was pretty scary!

It wasn't just the rear going wide, all 4 wheels lost traction!

Be careful out there, it's very cold and slippery tonight!!

Mal :)

Is there any like courses you can take your car on and get 'taught' how to handle your car in these conditions.

I'd like to think I'd know how to act but sadly I don't :(

FWD here too.

I'm sure i heard something about Police Training, the one where they effectively turn a car into a shopping trolley, then drench an area in water and get you to drive on it...

How is this relevant?

because the speed rating generally indicates the level of grip a tyre will give rather than just a speed rating.a y rated tyre will give you more grip than an h rated tyre as it is designed to work harder ect.

i aint slid yet since geting goodyear f1's fitted. country mile away from the old pirelli zero whatevers.

but yeh being really carefull around.

lol :D

F1s can't do squat when you're sitting on huge patches of ice in Wales, and you're acelerating in 3rd/4th gear and the wheels are spinning as the engine revs as if it's in neutral, however :D :o

I'm pretty sure this is absolutely untrue. I have Y rated tyres but I doubt they offer any more grip over W rated examples of the same tyre.

No, it's just a stronger tyre, which won't stretch or squish as much, so it won't overheat or fall off the rims at speed.
