A couple of quick questions HD playback?

Which HD codec are you using and specifically what have you tried to watch that isn't great?

I dont know much about AMDs as I'm an Intel person myself, but I believe the AMD 5000+ is capable of decoding 1080p material (in software). I also believe that there is no need to spend any money on extra hardware to enable you to view 1080p material, with no skipped frames.

You have to give us more information though.

ok I'm not quite sure what codec I'm using ( how do I find out?) and I have been trying to stream hd content from YouTube and vimeo and it's just quite smeared if that makes sense.

Right, first off, is it stuttering or is it just blurred?

I would also suggest that you try downloading a few of the trailers in the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx

Have a play around with both 1080p and 720p trailers and see if your PC can handle them. The way to tell is that if your PC cant handle the decoding process, it will start to stutter and skip frames...you will know that something isnt right.

You will also need to keep an eye on your CPU utilization, while playing the videos: if the CPU is constantly hitting 100% or near that, then we will need to do some work on improving things. But you need to download and watch the videos first.

I got a geforce 7300 le

7300LE should be able to play HD files, i'm sure this card has on board decoding.

My bro's PC has the 7300GS and his plays HD files perfectly.

Download the HD trailers and see if they work before u waste any money.

Also to ensure you have the correct codecs installed, you can google CCCP and download that codec pack which pretty much includes every codec under the sun.

Finally i noticed that you mentioned you wanted to watch Youtube files flawlessly, now i hope you know no matter what card you have, youtube videos will always be grainy. The graphics card cannot make a poor quality video suddenly look amazing.

I downloaded the files they both run smoothly but arn't as good looking as the as 1080p on my lcd which is what im trying to achieve. There is no skipping but it is still blurred a bit but not to much.
I also download the cccp codec.

Thats funny, i use a VGA cable to watch 1080p files in .mkv format on my 42" telly.

You can watch them, they just wont be true HD as the cable is physically incapable of transmitting the amount of data that is in a HD signal. I recommend you invest in one of the following depending on your connectors - DVI, HDMI or displayport

would watching a HD movie on my 24" 1920x1200 monitor using dvi on an x800xl be the same as watching the same movie on the same monitor except using a HD graphics like the ones stated above and using hdmi instead?

Yes exactly the same. If the HD content works now, it will work exactly the same regardless of what hardware you changed.

I don't get quite what you mean. Download a 1080 trailer from the Microsoft site. Play it. If it doesn't pause, skip, jump, then there's nothing wrong with your current hardware, and you don't need to change anything.

Explain. Do you mean files/ trailers from your computer don't look as good as playing a BlueRay on your HDLCD TV?

Are the files you downloaded 720P or 1080P?

Either way, as web-videos, they will have a lot more compression applied than a real BlueRay disk.

Also, although it makes no real difference, CCCP has no codecs. It is basically FFDShow and a few other filters and a couple of players. If you still struggle playing H.264 with CCCP then get yourself CoreAVC as it's H.264 decoder is a lot less resource hungry.

Your PC is playing HD files fine.

A new video card wont make any difference.

I'm quite surprised that people on this forum immediately started recommended the spending of money, without finding this out first. Tut tut.

Right, so you want to sharpen the image further?

I use ffdshow filter myself. I hook this up with Media Player Classic. I then use the "sharpen" option, to sharpen the image up further, if necessary.

I suspect that it could be that your monitor isnt upto scratch, but there is nothing wrong with your PC unit itself. Its more than capable of playing HD material.

Also, like the previous guy stated, dont use youtube HD material as a guide to image quality as these videos can actually have poor image quality, even though they claim to be 720p or 1080p.

Please tell me more about this "LCD" you speak of and your current monitor that isnt displaying HD videos as well as your "LCD". Need more info dude.

what i meant was in terms of picture quality will there be any difference?

No there should not be any difference. Or at least very, very minimal. Hopefully your display is 1920x1200 native so you are mapping pixel to pixel, no interpolation needed, and it's debatable whether you're decoding with hardware or software shouldn't make any difference as the standards are set on the decoding side (you can encode however you want as long as it's a compliment stream.)

Of course people will argue that not all graphics cards have the same quality output and there are reasons why edit and CAD suites generally use particular brands, and it's not only the adjustments available.

But that is something very few people are likely to notice, even with a top of the range monitor.

I downloaded a 1080p file from apple trailers and it runs perfectley so its not the card. I think its just the streaming of hd on sites like youtube (how can i get these to run smoother without blurring?) Ill try ffdshow see if that helps.
Thanks agian for everyones suggestions.

Pretty much any computer will play hd videos nowadays, you don't need any special cables or cards at all, onboard graphics is fine as the cpu decodes the video not the gpu.

gpuhdnx5.jpg

ATI Avivo™HD

NVIDIA® PureVideo™HD

If that was in response to my post in the example I stated the gpu would not be decoding the video, and in any case the cpu will decode it fine. Even my old athlon 2600 could play 1080p without gpu assistance! Can't believe people are reccomending buying a graphics card.
