Acer G24 backlight bleed and loud hissing

i think thats more the horizontal viewing angle more then anything. Make sure you not sitting 'below' the screen. Maybe even tilt the monitor more down, any improvement?

damn i was thinking about getting the Blue G24 for dual-screens but now im getting a little put off. That £367 price tag has definitely gotta be reduced for these 'known' problems. Thing is im still enjoying my G24 very much :)

well im asuming these problems are nowhere near as bad for anyone else. I just have a dogey G24. Hopefully Acer will replace it for me.

As for the viewing angles. They are definitly not right. I am sitting at a perfectly normal eye level and the top of the screen is as I described above. Even my 3 year old Belinea 20" doesn't suffer from this.
The only way I can get it to look normal, is if I stand up, and the top of the monitor is in line with my stomache. Needless to say, thats not acceptable.

Thats the problem, top of the screen is almost completely black in most games. Take WoW for instance, its extremely hard to make anything out on the minimap, and the green HP bar appears almost black, instead of green.

Heres an example of the problem, i recreated in photoshop:
The first image is a screenshot from WoW, what it normally looks like.
The second image is the same screenshot, showing what it looks like on my monitor. Note the extremely dark area at the top.

Image 1
Image 2

The second image looks terrible, definately should'nt be that bad, especially if you've got to stand up to improve the image. My monitor is'nt that bad, when I'm sat with the monitor at eye level the bottom part of the monitor displays blacks as a dark shade of grey.

Yep, so hopefully Acer will replace it for me. For a monitor marketed as a gaming monitor, its certinly not fit for gaming in my opinion.

ive just noticed that, when its been off all night, it pretty silent when I first turn it on. I've had it on for about an hour now, and its still pretty silent. I'll post again when it starts become loud again.

Also another issue I have, is the viewing angles. Im sitting infront of it now, with my eyes in line with the top half of the monitor, kinda like this:
._____________
....................
--EYE LEVEL--.
....................
____________

Yet the top quater of the monitor is noticably darker, and the bottom quater is noticably brighter than the rest of the screen. Its extremely anoying in games, as the top quater of the screen is almost black. I can't make out anything.

What did you expect from a TN panel? Vertical viewing angles are its achilles heel.

that's exactly what i've done. I submitted an RMA request to Acer. Need to wait till next week to hear from them

Good luck, last time I sent a monitor back to Acer for repair it took over 3 months, came back "fixed" and then promptly died again a week later!

Nah mate, TN's are nowhere near this bad. I have a 3 year old Belinea TN next to me, and its vertical viewing angles are fine when you're sitting at eye level. Its only when you stand up that you cant make anything out. Besides, others with the same monitor have confirmed that this is far from normal.

Well, we'll see what happens. If it takes longer than I thinks neccessary, then I will be on the phone to them everyday untill it is sorted.

 man that wow screenshot looks well bad. That certainly is not acceptable.

Like logue, i am sitting in front of a TN. A fairly average 2 year old samsung 20", and i have no problem with viewing angles head-on. I am sucker for anything with the word "gaming" on it:p, and i hope i do not live to regret my purchase.

Should arrive tomorrow so i will let you guys know my impressions

That is the trade off though, the angles may not be as good as a more expensive panel, but they don't suffer ghosting and bad input lag that plagues better monitors, so I guess it comes down to the choice of better colours and viewing angles with crap input lag on a better monitor or worse viewing angles with decent colours but no input lag, if your a gamer then you obviously go TN and if you like staring at photos all day a more expensive one.

viewing angles is not a problem for me as i sit at a computer desk. what is not acceptable is that amount of backlight bleeding(especially for a monitor sold at a premium price imo).

Exactly, and to be perfectly honest, I wouldn't mind so much if it was just one thing wrong. Like if it was just backlight bleed that was bad, but the brightness was uniform over the entire monitor, and there was no hissing.... That I could deal with. But the combination of all 3 defects has anoyed me to the point where it's just not acceptable.

Yes I agree surely when they tested it this issue should have been spotted, ive never had any problems buying grade b stuff except one time, I bought a decent Geforce GFX to tide me over on a new build till I could afford a beast card which I now have and the instant I put it into the PC there was constant red artifacts on the desktop at the top and it was apparent in every game, this was the classic symptoms of a dying card probably overclocked by the previous owner, I was amazed it was sold in this state, like no one bothered to test it!. Then it was sat in RMA for a month with no reply, in the end when it was time to buy a better card I managed to get a refund from OC and use the refund towards the more expensive card at the time which was the 8800 GTX, good luck getting this resovled, maybe you could try the same thing with OC like I did? phone ask for a refund of the original price then put the rest towards a new G24 at the same time on the phone.

What you suggested is a good idea, but the only problem is that I don't have the money right now, and even if I did, I wouldn't be too happy with the premium £367 price tag it has, especially when it was on offer for £315 last week.

Ok, I just found out thanks to the speedy response of an ocUK employee, that even though i bought the monitor on b-grade, I still have full access to Acer's collection and return warranty service, and that, if I have any problems returning the monitor to Acer, to leave him a note. So things are looking pretty good so far :)

im a gamer and i just upgraded from a 2x 19" to a hazro 30" and havent seen any ghosting or lag and reviews say the lag is very very low.. so nearly perfect screens are out there if you look but are willing to pay and 2x g24 would cost more than a 30" hazro and use up a lot more desk space but unfortuanly would have to place in exact positions because of viewing angles..nah ill stick to my ips (viewable from almost anywhere :)).

onto a different note..............

i did hear from some forums the nec 26" had reports of this humming/hissing noise on a small batch and had something to do with brightness level .. the higher it was set the more humming/hissing apparently best brightness for those was around 60% for no noise and some other screens a while back such as the benq 2400w had reports of noises from its built in power supply...

The hissing is related to the brightness of the monitor, as the darker images make less noise, and brighter images make more noise, but even when the monitor is on standby, you can still hear it.

what is the backlight bleeding like on your g24 sh4dy1981 when looking at at a dark movie or black screen?
