January Transfer Window Thread - rumours and signings here

Not doing too bad for a team with 2 players though, are we? Especially as one's been injured for half the season :p

edit: Not sure where this goes so i'll put it here. Insua will be representing Argentina in the South American Under-20's tournement and will be away untill the 2nd week of February

Weebull and Gilly, yup, agreed, thats what I've been saying. Next year(more likely the year after) if/when they establish as a top 6 side they can start offering big money for top 4 players and actually have a chance to get them. If they got Villa now, when bellamy would do, to get him they'd have to outspend Barca/Real and offer him higher wages, which will equate to probably 3-4 mil a year higher than the cost of getting your Bellamy's and Parkers to tide you over a few years.

Chelsea were a top 4 side before the buyout, Ranieri bought some great players and almost took the title with a very very good spine at the squad then Moaninho spunked hundreds of millions to win the titles for a few years basically. But they ended up paying £150k a week to a bunch of players who basically won them titles and so on, spending that same money, and losing 100mil a year to grow into a top 4 side would have been Ridiculous tbh.

City need some reliable proven players to make sure they don't crumble this year. Frankly just replacing Zabaleta and Hamann will go a huge way to that, a winger would help a lot and having Petrov back(soonish is it?) and probably a centre back and they'll have the trouble spots sorted and a little versatility in the squad in case of injuries, Kompany central mid/def, Richards cen/right, parker central midfield.

I reckon buying one huge player a year will mean in 3 years they have 7-8 fantastic players, a squad of good players and some decent cover and could well be looking at a title capable squad. But buying all those players now would be a big mistake.

As for Liverpool, damn, I really will be irritated if they win, not because they are Liverpool but because they aren't very good this year. Just the whole premiership just feels crap this year. Arsenal are a joke and not hugely lagging, Chelsea have had an awful run lately and are still right there. Man U have scored 4 goals in 6 games, one a dying seconds goal from a centre back and are still right there. ANy other year a team playing fantastically would be 10-15 points clear by now tbh. The bottom 12 teams are so absurdly close this year its insane. Partially its even the bad teams are better defensively(in general, Fulham, etc) and the best teams are having trouble scoring far more often than past years.

In all honesty I'd prefer to see a Villa, Everton, Chelsea or City game this year than Arsenal, Man U or certainly Liverpool(like any year :p ). They are just dull and have had some incredible luck(like the boro game and a bunch of others), totally outplayed and still get the result due not to good football or great play by Torres, but ludicrous mistakes that literally throw the game away. Bizarre year to say the least.

More on topic, Wenger has again stated another long term DM target he's been interested won't be coming, Imler. I said before, I'm seriously starting to think firstly he thinks we don't have a problem there, and that he doesn't actually want DM's anymore, which is killing us so badly.

Downing wants to move to be successful so he wants to move to Spurs, wtf, spurs are exactly the same team as Boro.

Except that Spurs won a cup last season, are already in the semi-finals of a cup this season and regularly play in Europe. Oh, and Spurs play to a full house every week. :p

Still don't understand why Spurs are going after Defoe. He wasn't good enough the first time. What's changed about his play to make Spurs think that he'll be any different this time around? Has he scored as many goals as Bent this season?

Downing wants to move to be successful so he wants to move to Spurs, wtf, spurs are exactly the same team as Boro.

He's not even moving to be at a more successful club, nor has he actually said he wants to go to Spurs, they're just the only club looking at him.

His reasons are that he was promised by the board when he signed his new contract that they'd invest more money into the first team squad to challenge for Europe again, they haven't so he feels lied too and therefore wants to leave. Fair play really.

Anyone reckon Redknapp has much control at Spurs? They were interested in Downing while Jol was there, then while Ramos was there and now while he's there. Can't remember Redknapp ever wanting him at Portsmouth and can't believe all three managers wanted him.

Hines joins Derby on loan from Boro.

Great defender and will have a very successful career.

Hines, Williams and Bates could be top class if they get games and no more injuries

One thing's for sure, if Downing wants to move to a club willing to waste a shed load of cash season in, season out.... he's going to the right place.

Downings magnificantly crap though, why does anyone want to spend big money on him. Yes he has the odd game where he might be great. The big clubs are successful not at all to do with the trickyness of certain players, or the odd game they are truly excellent in, its down to the consistancy and the level they will almost always play at even when not at their best. IE Ronaldo has almost in everyones opinion been not a patch on last year, yet he still has a bunch of assists and is still (i think) Man U's top scorer and has missed several games due to injury, he's still putting them in even when he's not doing the outstanding, thats what you need. Not Denilson/Song who are so prone to terrible games but Gilberto who wasn't setting the world alight but(other than last year) was solid and very rarely had a bad game. The key is consistancy not quality(to a degree).

SWP, Downing, Crouch etc, these are players that can have the odd brilliant game but they are so few and far between and when they aren't having this odd exceptional games they are completely non existant. But tbh, Downings the least impressive of the lot to be honest, he's essentially a big fish in a small pond but he only sticks out as they don't have a lot of those truly quality players there but there are more consistant and more valuable players at Boro than Downing.

Someone said and I agree though, Spurs seem a club who tend to go after similar players no matter the manager. Not far off a Real Madrid setup, the bosses want a couple specific players and the manager can choose the "filler" players.

But then certain clubs seem to go for english players no matter how average they are as English fans, pundits, commentators are blind to how good they are. A side with all foreign players that is crap and loses deserves it, a club with all English players that has a crap game and loses is unlucky and they supposedly deserve more. Frankly having the likes of Crouch and Downing brings in fans and money as people go nuts over English players.

Milan are now reportedly after Pennant :D

According to the Times they've offered him a pre-contract agreement to join them in the summer for free. Not sure how that will work though as we could still (albeit unlikely) extend his deal by another year if he features in a few more games. They're also reporting that we've told Milan that Agger's not for sale. This is also in the Guardian, who also mention that Dossena's not going either (not a suprise now that Insua's away for a month).

Finally the Independent are reporting that Rafa doesn't want to sign Heskey or Johnson (as expected).

Oh and Marvin Pourie (a 17 year old German kid we signed 18 months ago) looks likely to be joining Schalke for around £2m.
