I've had my eye out for a Golf R32 for a couple of years, and they are now (almost) in my budget. I can get a 2003 model for £9,000 or even less if lucky. I'm looking to go trade only, purely for warranty. Insurance is affordable, at least the quotes I've tried out are.

Any alternatives I should consider? More car for same/less money if I look at a different model? I'd like to stick with a hatch, that has some oomph.

Cupra R?
Octavia/Fabia VRS? (Not the best looking cars around..)

Any common faults/defects I should be on the look out for?

Much obliged :)

Well do you want sometimes4WD or some turbo'd FWD monster like a Cupra R, ST, VXR

Can I suggest going for a drive :p

Cheers Grad, don't think I would have gone for a Fabia anyway, they just don't seem appealing. :)

Going for a drive will happen before I buy any car. I'm not in the buying phase yet anyway, I'm merely counting my chips and checking my options. :)

MPG is not a priority for me. I currently drive <2,000 miles a year. In 2008 I bought a tank of petrol a whopping 3 times. :)

Focus ST's.. hmm. I quite like Focus' but will the ST have as much bite as an R32?

I think it's the driving <2000 miles bit. Get a bikecycle!!

Save wear and tear on the poor car you're planning to buy! :)
In the few times that I do drive, it's a 100mile or so round trip. I'm not cycling that :p I also lug stuff around a fair bit, which is not possible without a vehicle. :)

I don't commute in the car, and usually buy groceries etc. in the city and take home on tube than drive to a supermarket or what not.

Less than 2,000 miles per year? How about something like a Lotus Elise if you don't need the practicality and the car is purely for fun.

Edit/ Just read the above. Maybe not if you need luggage space.

I like this guy's way of thinking.

Elise / VX220 would be much more fun!

Also you have a passenger seat to get the stuff in that your lugging around :p

Damn, it was the last line, but then you added the Focus bit and I couldnt quote it otherwise everyone would have seen anyway! Cats out of the bag now though.. looks like you might have got away with it.

Infact, reading your requirements then your vehicular need is more than justified.

Surely depends what time of year he needs to travel most and what he needs to "lug around".. last time I checked neither had a lot of room.

He could be lugging around inflatable women during the summer.. which would mean a VX220 is right on the cards!

True. As said by someone in another thread though. You adapt for the car you drive. If you can't lug stuff around then you may know someone else who can?

Edited for retardedness

I would imagine space (for me!) is a problem in cars like the Elise? I'm 6'2" and er.. quite wide. 46" chest and 24" across the shoulders.
