Stupid Cable Braiding Question

Ive got a load of cable braid lying about that Ive never used so looking to actually come around to using it...

What I have realised though is that there are different sizes of braid and heatshrink - whats best for different cables? I guess its fan cables, SATA/rounded IDE cables and PSU/power cables...

Also can you cable braid over connectors easily without removing them? I suspect not (to do a good job) but I dont have the special tools to remove them (thought they were overpriced for a once in lifetime job), what would work instead of them?

Also any help on cable managing the original CM Stacker would be appreciated - as Ive got the CrossFlow Fan Ive got no useful gaps to route cable through - absolutely mess atm...

Well for power cables you might want to check if you have a modular or non modular psu. Because on a non modular psu i think you would have to open up the psu and start the sleeving from there. As for heat shrink i dont think you would have a problem if the connector was small, like a fan cable but for something larger like 24pin power connector, it might be worth getting one of those little tools.

The PSU is a 620HX so its all modular - not really bothered in sleeving it if its too much hassle since the braid I want to use is black and they are already 'sleeved' - so more sake of aesthetics. Also Im a bit squeamish regards mucking around with the PSU pins. Its more for those extra power splitters Ill have to use...

EDIT: Any idea what the tools are called - dno where to buy them from - hard to google as I dont know what they are called :p

I used some staples from Wilkos to do this

and a lot of patience!

Bloody hell hefner . . never seen it done to that extent! Talk about overkill . . . . Looks good though!

It's not overkill, it's awesome.

It's exactly what I'm going to do if I can pluck up the courage. I have the sunbeam psu mod kit so I'm going to practice on an old psu first.

Hefner,

If you take your time and sleeve each wire individually then are the chances of something going wrong slim?

Can it make the wires sit a bit looser in the connector after?

I take it that it voids your warranty also?

It would be great if you could provide us with some more images and a quick guide, please, pretty please?

Yes it voids your warranty :p

It's the price you pay for fun sadly.

Also they connectors don't get looser in at all.

Doing them one at a time or in pairs is very easy and reduces the chances of accidents.

The best advice really is to take out one cable, put some sleeve over it to find the right length you want and need.

Then cut that and place the sleeving over the cable again, along with the heat shrink. Then simple shrink the heat shrink with a hairdryer( best for me ), heat gun or lighter. Once done, simple pop the cable back into the connector :D

My results quite some time ago.

Yep I did all my cables in the end - piece of ****. Didnt bother to do the PSU ones since the HX620W comes with jet black molded cables. Makes such a difference to the case and even though its still a mess, its not effecting the airflow and so cooling and because its black you dont notice it as much. Its a bugger to tell what cables what now though :p.

Just used a large needle to get the cable ends out and a bit of patience - no real skills needed. Though I ran out ofheatshrink near the end and had to do with slightly larger one that didnt hold the braidas tight but its all fine...

Cant be arsed :p. Looks nice but - shame about those magnolia Noctuas Ive got on my TRUE - spoils the metallic nature of my parts :p.

To the spray can...

EDIT: Having a fan controller and media bay doesnt help with cable management :(. Might pay someone one day to do it - just dont have the energy...

I've just done mine but i bought the Akasa 24 pin & 8 pin extensions instead and braided those so need to void the warranty on my psu.:)

It has no effect on the warranty on Silverstone PSU's.

YES! I'm getting the Silverstone Decathalon 1200 too!

One thing I did want to ask though, once you fully braided atx24 how can you test it?

Can't hotwire it as I wouldnt know where the green and black cables are due to the heatshrink being right upto the connector.

I practiced on an old psu lastnight and I had no problems whatsoever removing the pins.

If it works first time once braided are you in the clear then? Or can it do any long time damage?

Could you put some sort of mark on the plug before you start so you could see which pins were the 'jumpstart' ones? Once it's plugged into the board, the marks would be hidden.

No, if it works first time, it's working fine.
