9800GTX + downgrade from 8800GTX

loadsa is right, the 8800GTX is faster than the 9800GTX+

No he’s wrong, the 9800GTX+ is faster, 8800GTS 512MB vs 8800GTX was debatable, this is not as it's clocked significantly higher with even more potential to overclock, and in this case has more memory.

It’s an upgrade, I used to own a 8800GTX and a 8800GTS 512MB, people thinking that the 8800GTX is faster just because it's based on the 8800GTS need a hard slap and a reality check.

Depending on the game he will get quite a loss in performance with the 9800GTX compared to the old 8800GTX for 3 reasons :

1. Available Framebuffer Memory ( 768mb for the 88GTX vs 512mb for the 98GTX )
2. Available Memory Bandwidth ( 86.4 for the 88GTX vs 70.4 for 98GTX )
3. ROPS ( 24 for the 88GTX vs 16 for the 98GTX )

Again, depending on the game the 88GTX should come out on top :)

I love it when OCuK debates gfx cards! keep em coming this is very interesting

Its not interesting, without AA and AF the 9800GTX will be slightyly faster due to it clock speed advantage BUT turn on AA and AF and the old 8800GTX is faster because of its extra bandwidth, ROPS and VRAM :)

I always play games with atleast 4xMSAA on, except Crysis :)

the 8800GTX is beaten quite soundly by the 9800GTX+ but its swings and roundabouts with the 9800GTX.

In games with heavy VRAM usage the 88GTX is faster, in games with higher AA levels that require more framebuffer memory the 88GTX is faster. In normal games 98GTX is faster cus of its clock speed and in some games its only 3-4fps faster :)

A 9800GTX is what? £160??

NEW 88GTX are £100 on ebay... bang for buck ;)

well the card in question as stated by the opening poster is a 1gb variant so infact the 8800gtx would lose out in frame buffer intensive tasks....:D
