GTX 280 "Squealing" in games...

Glad to see you eventually got sorted out.

Now if we can just get the GTX280 fan to stop sounding like a jet engine
all full load we are sorted :-)

My 8800 GTX does this, apparently its the circuirtry on them working hard (only does it on mine when folding) Its fine apparently, mines water cooled with a full cover EK block and does it, so nothing down to cooling

Got this issue. Its damn annoying!

Makes a buzz/squeal sound when I do the following:

- When I scroll the mouse (but only on certain sites, like bbc.co.uk and OcUK front page)
- Game menu screens (HL2 DM, CS)
- Non taxing games (Vista Chess Titans, whenever the 3d board moves for example)
- Windows Dreamscene moving backgrounds

After the noise starts it then contines into other things, like simply opening the start menu and scrolling through the programs and whenever the hard drive is accessed.

I was 100% the noise was coming from the PSU (Corsair HX620) so I replaced that. Still does the same thing, probably a bit worse now.

Tried different graphics drivers, motherboard drivers, resolutions, changing the mouse, changing USB ports. Still there.

The only time I've ever got it to stop was when I was using the Standard VGA Graphics Driver.

That is really strange, mine certainly doesn't make that noise whilst scrolling through website pages.

Over exaggerated.

I have heard of this happening to other peoples graphics cards too, in other forums. Never paid much attention to it though, so cant offer any real info, but dig through some other forums and see if you can find anything usefull. Other than that, go for an RMA.

It sounds like its coming from the back of the PSU, I've exchanged the PSU once and this new one seems to do exactly the same thing. Wonder if its the motherboard causing the PSU to react in this way?

Sometimes a game will give my tv interference but thats probably more to do with the crappy tv then the computer

Obviously it can also interfere with onboard sound or any sound card even but I assume thats not the case in any of the above posts, its the actual card

Unfortunately it doesn't work like that. All PSU's will react differently to load and squeal to different degree's. If your lucky it will be outside your hearing range.

Luck of the draw mate.
True, because what baffled us is that we have very similar systems and yet mine didn't produce the high pitched squeal that his did!

Got the same problem with my new GTX 280 - thing is the same thing happened with my last 8800 GTX as well - yet the 4870's never had the problem. So is it certainly a PSU issue? My PSU is a Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro 1000W

I get the high pitched squeel in various games, not all though. It seems worst in the menu screens??
My cure was games that squeel activate vsync and tripple buffer in control panel, totally cures it for me.
In games like fear, I figures I dont really need to play at 300fps with my 2 gtx 280's plus it plays much smoother @60 vsyncd. Gmes this happens in for me
FEAR
CRYSIS
OBLIVION.

I have a Tagen 900w psu, I have been told by everyone this is enough, what do you guys think?

I HAD SAME PROBLEM WITH GTX260 PALIT 216SP!

Squealing was loud during gameplay, aspecially on Crysis and modern high end games!

I RMA'd this card as it was annoying and for price i expect quality!

now enjoying my 4870 :)

When I was building my current rig which is currently based on Asus P5Q Deluxe. I initially picked an Asus Maximus Formula motherboard, I was getting noises similar to those that the OP described. When in the BIOS screens sound like interference, however when in windows it sounded more like a hard drive being accessed. I RMA'd the board and change the the P5Q and no more noise. So perhaps it is your motherboard rather than anything else?
