Recommended PC gamepads?

Can someone recommend some decent PC gamepads? My past experience with them have been rubbish on PC with the exception of the old MS Sidewinder Gamepads - everything else has felt like the cheap non-official rubbish you buy as a second controller for consoles to disadvantage your friends in games :o. Would need to be something not to big as I have fairly small hands (the N64 and original Xbox controllers have been to chunky).

The games I would use them for would be things like Pro Evo, Madden and the Lego games.

Also, I already have some controllers from the PS2 gathering dust, so was wondering if anyone could recommend a good adaptor so I could use them on USB?
 
If your hands will allow, then the 360 pad is excellent on the PC nowadays. Failing that there are various companies that'll do a PS2 --> USB adapter. :)
 
360 pad is absolutely the best choice unless you play any games where you make heavy use of a d-pad. For those, ps2 pad+converter :)
 
I use a Logitech Cordless Rumblepad 2 (i have two of them).
Used for PES mostly. Recommended.

EDIT: They also do a wired version which I also own (although I don't use anymore) and had no problems whatsoever. Obviously these are a bit cheaper as well.

Having read your post fully, I would probably just recommend you get an adapter for your ps2 controller(s) if that's the style you are comfortable with.

Yea I would say get the 360 pad with wireless adapter or other choice is get the wired 360 pad, I play quite a few fighting games so I prefer the old ps2 style pad so I got similar one from GAME for a tenner ;) not too sure how much they are now and its also wired btw
 
Are there particular PS2 adaptors though or are they all much the same?

Also with the 360 pads is the wireless really any better? I'll be going back to a corded mouse soon as I'm fed up of interupted or miscalibrated actions from the MS cordless mouse I have its just not quick enough for online games when this happens even though it is only a second or two its enough to get me killed - something I am keen to avoid with a controller.

I've been looking for one of those Crossfire wireless receiver things for ages now, everywhere seems to be either out of stock or stupidly expensive...

Simply the best pad on the market bar none. PS2 convertors are just not as good as this mainly due to the poor software that comes with them.

Plug in the XBox pad and it just works - all Games For Windows games are compatible with them out of the box and more besides.
