January Transfer Window Thread - rumours and signings here

Smith must have been ****ing **** at Leeds then ;)

BOLLLLLLL

Take out the very and I agree with the first part, can't agree with you on the second point though :p

completely agree

Only an average striker for us - even though he always gave 100% (and the red mist a little too often)

As a midfielder he did his job but it was more of a square peg in a round hole - but certainly still comitted

He would never get on the bench now, unless it was for Carling Cup games and not giving opportunities to the kids

Still cant believe we got £6m for him - at the time it was a fantastic sell (a little like the Richardson sale, who has flourished , comparatively, at Sunderland)

smith had his moments, anyone remember when he nearly lobbed van der sar from about 10 yards in his own half?

And that goal against Arsenal, never forget that, great two footed tackle and toe poke through lehmanns legs :D

could never fault him for commitment and work rate. just a shame he picked up that injury.

Ask most Man Utd fans and they'll all say Smith was a very good player for us. I'd take him back in a shot.

He was good in his first 6 months / season then was pretty poor. Fergie didn't even know how to use him. He's now turned himself into some sort of midfielder.

Delph has gone from the official LUFC squad page :/

Hopefully we get Delph. Got a good history of improving players who come to us from Leeds.

How's that?

Smith wasn't nearly as good. You could argue Rio didn't improve, he stayed at the same level. I suppose you gave him more of a chance, he was out of the shadow of two better players after the move. The Dirty Frog didn't improve, he was class before and during his time at Leeds.

Unless you're going back to the early 80s - I can't be arsed who else has moved in that direction - you're wrong. I can only remember Joe Jordan and Gordon McQueen.

The best player to have moved in either direction and improve is Strachan ;)

Hmm, he was gone last night and it was reported on Vital Football this morning, so I checked again and he was still gone. I can see him now.

Odd.

Looks real, the formatting is just out it would seem.

Not on the squad list yet though, maybe they're just waiting for it to be announced before they add him to the squad list.

I would say Cantona was a pretty good purchase in the other direction, despite the feelings of Leeds fans, and wasn't it for only £1million :O

Delph's an attacking central midfielder isn't he? If he has gone to Villa good on him, almost no way they'd offer the same wages/incentives but its a great football choice. Attacking midfielder, Petrov's form is widly varying as well as him aging. Sidwell and Barry are really defensive midfielders though Barry seems to get more attacking/less defensive every year.

Of what will "likely" be the top 4 clubs, or almost certainly the top 5 clubs it will be the single club with almost no real attacking midfielders, and no cover in that position to say the least. IE Villa out of the current top 5 he'll get in the team soonest. Good to see people willing to go to the right choice, when they seemingly have offers from everyone.

Of course if it turns out he goes to Man U or even worse Arsenal(where we barely have a single midfield player who can't play central midfield/attacking) he's a twit :p

More reports of Ronaldo signing what I assume is a precontract to play for Real come the summer.

Frankly this season even more than this one, he's won everything last year really, this year if they retain anything, or everything, and he's won every award is there really anything left to do there? For Ronaldo the ONLY possible way is down from here, where as he's next to nothing in other leagues.

Rio had a terrible concerntration problem that he has ironed out while at Utd - and surely the experience whilest playing for us (true of the other transfers too) also improves him as a player

Think its dubious to say that after this long at the absolute top of the game (where Leeds never managed to get to) Rio hasnt improved.

Its arguable about Smith for sure, Cantona certainly improved without a doubt

Cant believe Delph would go to AV - but you never know

Surprising there is no news about it either way tbh

edit as to Ronaldo - early report says £77m in the summer possibly rising to £105m, absolutely ridiculous sum of money - but still doesnt mean Utd have agreed , all that was "agreed" was between the player and RM supposedly

Check this out:

As far as I can tell that's their official page, it's very well done if it's not real.

In the same way they have signed Mohammed Dennoun..

etc etc

Just a whole heap of players and change the number to suit.

Why not AV, Arsenal, Fabregas, maybe Arshavin, Denilson, etc, a half dozen or more players would be ahead of him in the position. Arguably Man U don't really have defensive midfielders, but mostly attacking midfielders with a couple Anderson/Carrick(and Hargreaves eventually, maybe) not bad defensively. Liverpool, Gerrard, Alonso, not displacing either of them anytime soon. Chelsea, Ballack, Lampard, Deco, not replacing any of them. Then Villa, probably a top 4 club, pretty certain to be Uefa cup next year if not the CL, and Petrov ahead of him.

If I was Delph I know who'd I'd choose with a view to getting in the team in my first year at the club for games other than worthless cup and the odd bottom 3 prem league game. He's young and good, surely its better to get games and be known rather than rot in the reserves, improve quicker and if you want 3-4 years later look for a move to bigger club(assuming Villa drop off or don't improve further).
