Had a thought.

If the maximum speed limit on the road is 70mph why aren't cars restricted to this instead of 150? I understand it's a lot more complicated than that but sometimes I wonder what's the point of all these fast cars when in 'theory' no one should go above 70. In an ideal world I think everyone would have 2 cars - 1 for driving on the UK roads no more than 70mph and 1 for on a track.

Bit of a rant. Go easy on me ;)

Because that's how cars are marketed these days. A 1.6 and 5 litre V8 will both do 70mph, but many car drivers would rather have the V8 just because they know it will be capable of going faster. Although I think this will change soon, as can be seen with the influx of smaller engined cars that are aimed at being economical as opposed to fast.

Because you can cross the channel and then travel in France at 130km/hour legally, which is 80mph :)

It's not just about top end speed, it also about accelleration.

I remember someone posting on here once, they were going along on the motorway at 70mph and a lorry next to them started to jack knife - they powered away and past it.

Thats a reason why.

What if it was taken a step further and the car was restricted to the speed limit of the road you were on, using some kind of GPS system?

What happens if you do a lot of driving around Europe. You buy you're nice AM DBS in the UK thats limited to 70mph and you drive to Germany and watch as German Kia Cee'd's power past you on the Autobahn (sp?).

What about private land/track?

Also say your in the fast lane of a motorway, doing 70mph, overtaking a car doing 68mph. It's gonna take a while to get fully past and a safe distance past to move in. What if you've got a police car that needs to get past. You'll be holding them up.

I remember reading about someone who was forced to do 109MPH or something because there was no way he could move into the slower lane and he didn't want to hold up the Police car.

I'd never even consider top speed when buying a car. It's pointless.

It's all about acceleration and fuel economy when it comes to performance.

Same, top speed is a figure I'm aware of but no way I would pay more money for a car that'll do 155MPH than one that will do 120MPH.

Although I have found cars with a higher top speed are usually a lot better travelling at higher speeds, but thats also down to the size of the car and other stuff, not the top speed.

Because more often I prefer to speed up to avoid hazardous situations rather than brake. Having the car hit some imaginary rev limiter at 71mph would probably eventually get me killed.

Id agree with a 70mph if we could make everyone do 70mph, ie the idiots that sit in the inside lane doing 45, these people imo are more of nuisance on the motorway than the outside lane morons.

Because a car isn't always sold to be taken on the road. Can be used for tracks, or private road. So the goverment surly can have no control over this?
