Q6600 - a bit too hot

Hi there

I have just got a new (2nd hand) Q6600 installed in my computer but the temps are very high compared to my last dual core.

My dual core ran at 29-30 degrees with core temp

This runs at 83, 61, 68 and 80

Is there a settling period?

I am using ocz freeze as the compound and only spread a thin layer on. Too little?

Edit: Or do I put a little pea sized blob on and just but the fan on?

Something is not right! Is that stock settings?

I use a small drop in the center for and I use Arctic Silver for the compound.
 
Thats really bad for stock, try re-sitting the heatsink and reapply the compound.

DONT leave it like this unless you really like fried chips ;)
 
That is a tad hot, I'd suggest it's not seated correctly.

Right I reseated and applied a small pea drop to centre and put back in but the temps are still high.

They are lower but still at stock i dont think this high.

63,63,49, 51

This is with OCZ Freeze and a freezer pro 7 (do you think its the compound?)

My last chip never went much above 30
 
Those temps are all over the place. Either your heatsink isn't seated properly which is quite likely considering the cr@p pushpin design of the FP7 (I had one too!), or the base of the chip or heatsink isn't flat and needs sanding and polishing.

The temps of the cores should be within a few degrees of each other

Well the chip itself does seem to have scratches on it. My old one is as smooth as a babies bottom.

How do I go about correcting this? And is it ok to have the computer on when its running at 65,54,50,63?

I have mine clocked to 3.4Ghz and it idles at around 50°C under a Tuniq Tower fan on low.

Full load is high 60's fan on full.
 
Use Arctic Silver 5 or similar thermal paste, would be a good start.

Apply as per their instructions.

The freezer pro 7 is a little cack because of that horrendous pin connection system. I'd recommend something with a bit more cooling power, such as :-

As its on offer and I use the non lighty version.

Well I dont have any arctic silver 5. My freezer pro 7 has been fine in the past although I would agree with the fact that it has rubbish connectors.
 
Well I finally got it working. Not perfect temps for stock but a hell of a lot better. It turned out to be the blasted freezer pro pegs. Damn them!!! Two of them were not attaching correctly.

I got temps of 42, 36, 36 and 42 now. Which I think I can live with.

Hmm... I've got a F7 on my Q6600 with 'higher than desirable' temps.

The F7 pegs were hard to get fitted properly, how does the Tuniq Tower attach to the motherboard as I really don't want to remove the mobo to fit a backplate!
 
Unfortunately it's a backplate design. But realistically that is the only way you will get a firm fit. No push pin design can apply the pressure required.

It is a pest taking the board out, but really once you start you'll find it only takes about 20-30 mins :)
 
Given the price of the tuniqs just now (wasn't they over 50 quid at one point?) I might upgrade my F7P even though I've never had problems with the temps I do find its noisy at full whack. Is the tuniq quieter, and does it connect to the mobo via a standard 3 pin header or is it a molex job?
 
Mine connects to the motherboard and you can adjust the fan speed with a controller. It's silent up to half power and veru quiet after that, I really do rate them.
 
Ahh, those sodding AC7 push pins. I was terrified I was going to break my motherboard but I got it seated correctly in the end, after much cursing and struggling.

Then I realised I had fitted it oriented the wrong way, so that the fan was blowing towards the front of my case ;-;.
