I love old Landys, I have always had a soft-spot for them (my parents used to own a '50s series 1 SWB). But I've noticed something strange, they appear to be taking over from the quad with young chav-types. Two apprentices where I work have just bought Landrovers (these guys are 18 and 19), and I've seen an increasing amount of them being driven by the baseball cap brigade.

Also, on the recent 'Kemp on gangs' programme there were a couple of young chav-types arseing about in Landrovers.

Indeed, there is a thread in these very forums from an 18-year-old looking to buy a Landrover (not calling that OP a chav BTW).

Is it just me who has noticed this?

Most of the farmers kids round here dress like Chavs and inherit the odd Defender to hoon around in. Been like this for as long as I can remember here!

Yeah, that I can understand, but I'm talking about non-farmer 18/19-year-olds going out and buying them, seems to be happening a lot at the moment.

My cousin could have had a year old E-Class merc if he wanted to, he chose a year old SWB, then the next year changed it for a LWB, with some 22"s. Edit, not a farmers son either

:(

Yea, there's a Defender 90 around here that I pass occasionally parked up, last time there were two stereotypical 'Chavs' in there headbanging to some DnB, classic moment was when one went "dis needs a sub or two".........

<dies>

Funny you should mention it, I've notices 3 or 4 in the last week. You might well be on to something..

*Checks other thread*

Oh yeah, so you did :o That'll teach me for skip reading threads :o

They tend to cost about the same to insure as any small hatchback does when your a new driver, but you essentially get a lot more car for your money.

You get something equipped with the absolute essentials required to drive a car and little else. The have poor handling on the road, negligible performance and the petrol engined ones are very thirsty. You'd have to be slightly odd in the head to actually use one of these as basic transport if you didn't need it's off-road or towing abilities.

Na, there pretty practical, easy to modify, there fun, you can go green laning in them.

Pratical how other then what Dogbreath has said?

Easy to modify into what?

How is a poorly performing poor handling car fun?

Green laning is something you can do with a weekend toy

But if you can only afford one car when your young then you can't afford a separate weekend toy.

There practical, as in you can store lots of things in them, they can carry a lot of people.

There fun because you can take them anywhere, and they look well good.

You can modify them by putting winches, snorkels, spot lights, big tyres etc on them.

Ah HEM...106d... :p

Seriously though, Landys are for famers/middle of nowhere country folk, not for in towns.. They are thirsty and don't have great performance, the handling isn't THAT bad if you know how to drive...so for a new driver, it is bad. :p

Green laning is using it's off-road capabilities is it not?

They are certainly very practical if you are a farmer and need to tow a horsebox, or carry a few bales of hay out to your animals. For basic road transport there are numerous more practical, comfortable and better performing choices.

But if you can only afford one car when your young then you can't afford a separate weekend toy. You'd be surprised. As a 2nd car on a low mileage policy you can afford them/anything as a weekend toy.

There practical, as in you can store lots of things in them, they can carry a lot of people. What? They hold the same as a hatchback, saloon or estate.

There fun because you can take them anywhere, and they look well good. You can't take them anywhere. To go offroad and not get stuck you need off road tyres, which are very different from on road tyres, more than a couple of inches of mud and you'll get stuck same as a hatchback. Put on offroad tyres and you'll have godaweful handling on the road

You can modify them by putting winches, snorkels, spot lights, big tyres etc on them. No point in any of that lot unless they are going to get the use, which as a main vehicle like you are suggesting, you won't give them any of that use.
