This is a really sad incident. I don't think there is a thread on it here already.

A 20-YEAR-OLD model who was a finalist to represent Brazil in the Miss World contest has died after having her hands and feet amputated because she had contracted a severe urinary infection.

Doctors had been forced to amputate her hands and feet after she developed septicaemia.

Health officials said in a statement that Mariana Bridi's condition deteriorated overnight and she died early this morning.

The Espirito Santo State Health Secretariat said in the statement she died from complications related to a generalised infection, Associated Press has reported.

It was caused by the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which is known to be resistant to several kinds of antibiotics.

Bridi had been in the hospital in the city of Serra in south-eastern Brazil since January 3.

She became ill in December and doctors originally diagnosed her with kidney stones, local media said.

Mariana Bridi da Costa had been in a hospital in Serra, in the south-eastern state of Espirito Santo, and on artificial respiration following the procedures, according to several newspapers.

Her boyfriend, Thiago Simoes, told the G1 news website that Bridi fell ill on December 30, but was initially misdiagnosed with kidney stones.

The infection quickly spread, causing her to go back to hospital for tests that revealed her condition.

Surgeons had to act to remove her damaged hands and feet.

Bridi was twice a finalist in the Brazilian stage of the Miss World pageant.

Just seems amazing to me that in the year 2009, someone can have their hands and feet amputated, and then die over a simple infection :( I guess it shows you how vulnerable we are.

From reading that I think the infection came first, was misdiagnosed, and then the hands and feet were removed to help stop the spread of infection? Too little, too late.

I may be wrong. Horrible either way.

Damn 0.o thats sad.

RIP Mariana

Agree with what you say though DD, then again I am surprised at most of the things people seem to suffer with these days thinking why is this or that still about to mess us up.

It's quite unusual because P. aeroginosa normally only affects those who are immunocompromised (It contaminates moist places like catherters etc.) and is increasingly giving us grief trying to control it in health care establishments. It is very nasty when it is a bacteraemia infection which it sounds like she had.

I wouldn't wish it on anybody and particularly not a young person with an obviously bright future ahead of them.

RIP :(

I think its a very sad story, and just because people die every day it doesnt mean that its any less upsetting.

dunno why people on here feel the need to act so heartlessly, must be the forums high population of depressed angry nerds

Accidents happen but this young girl with her whole life ahead of her died for no good reason at all. It made me shed some tears and think how crap life can be.

For sure - but Azagoth make a good point.

Thousands of people die "for no good reason at all", in fact many of them die not even as a result of technical or medical accidents and mistakes as was was the case with the ferry and the Bridi girl, but as the direct and anticipated consequence of decisions.

What value a human life? Why recognise one and not another? How does the media choose who to highlight? I think these are interesting questions about society.
