Fish Tanks :)

THE MAN IN THE SHOP WANTS TO SELL YOU THINGS. Maybe I am wrong, perhaps the whole idea of cycling is rubbish, and thousands of experts on fish and the nitrogen cycle in aquaria are wrong. Yer, on second thoughts, the man in the shop who spoke to your mate must be right.

I was once like you, and thought it was all rubbish, I learned my lesson :)

At the end of the day there are chemicals out there that work and make a tank safe straight away.

We are in the future now pal. Im not saying anyone is wrong but why would the man who owns a chain of aquariums and reptile rooms make things up if my fish might die causing me a financial loss? He would lose business and i woudl go to one of the several other aquarium shops in the area.

Ive been to some fish shops where a guy has said 7 days minimum and ive been to others where they have said 24 hours. This guy gave my mate this really good stuff and he poured it straight into his filter and 2 hours later voila!!!!

Mate, the fish grow to the tank. It will take 10 years for a clown loach to grow that size, thats why they are £40 + to buy at that size.

I have a pleco that grows to 1 metre but he wont ever do so and ive had him for 3 years and hes the same size.

That is all i have to say on that matter.

Back on topic for me.

Yeah, I don't think that'd be too wise, this is just a 7 gallon Aquaone for the betta. Don't really want any other fish in and certainly don't want the sheer volume of (plant ruining) snails... :|

I've heard putting celery in a glass overnight works alright, they go in the glass and are then easy to remove... Was this an old wive's tale or would it genuinely work?

New one on me, wont hurt to try I dont think! If there is just a Betta in there, thats the same as was in my tank I used "Snail away" on, and they all died within minutes, some in seconds, and the Betta seemed perfectly happy..

So might be worth a try if all other methods fail :)

It's good practice to cycle the aquariums. My girlfriend (marine biology masters grad) has explained to me why, but honestly i stopped listening. I just pulled a sad face when she said i couldn't have any fishies yet :(

Thats partly true, but any decent business will want you to come back - if they give you dud advise and you kill all your fish your not overly likely to come back to them.

Regardless i'll do my research on the whole thing and see how it goes :)

well ive clearly been told duff info lol
I'm going to end up with aload of right angle fish!
I may take the pleco back to the shop and see if they will trade for other fishies.
Anyway, lets stop the heated debate and get back onto your thread.
So you got any pics with fishies in????

The tank is basically just settling down at the moment, once i am certain the tank is fully established, then the bigguns will start to go in, one at a time.

There are fish in the those pics, you will just have to look hard to see them!!

I will see if i can get some pics of the Birchir and my Crayfish later on tonight. I might have a few pics from some of my older tanks when i lived with my parents years ago, they are on an old HDD somewhere.

Im really into the more unusual fish its just that my LFS never seem to have anything in that interests me. I tend to travel 30 miles to bridgemere garden centre as they usually have quite a decent selection.

Heres a quick pic of my tank..

Mr Tommo,

Have you ever been to Maidenhead Aquatics? (I think this is the nearest to you - http://www.fishkeeper.co.uk/store_details.php?storeid=26 )
They usually are very good, not been to any in the midlands but there are a few near you. They are the best LFS chain I have ever used. Wide selection of tanks and fish stock including loads of odd-balls and large fish :)

we went to the guildford branch: http://www.fishkeeper.co.uk/store_details.php?storeid=17 did seem to have a very good selection & came highly recommended by a friend :)

When I got my tank I was told about the 3 day cycle, using chemicals, but I decided against it, I wanted to go for the un le natural way, although it took a while for the tank to be ready, I wanted it to be perfect.

Very nice!

Love your tin of fish goodness! ive got a goodies tin aswell, treatments etc etc :)

some nice tanks here... used to have a tank but didn't know much about them.

spent a good 2 years trying to find something that wouldn't get eaten by a 8 inch Pacu.

failed in the end and gave up, I think the two 4 inch oscars he killed was the final straw. (it literally tore them in half)

(i know pacu's grow way to big, but fish shop didn't explain at time)

in the end the only fish he could live with was a frontosa cichlid of similar size...

them fish should not be together you have african and american cichlids mixed together they require different types of water and different foods. not to mention the agressive nature of the Ps Crabo(common name bumble bee cichlid the yellow and black one in the top middle of the tank). I'm very surprised he hasn't killed the rest of the fish yet :(
