Looks like my XFX 260GTX Black Edition has gone bad after having it for only 7 weeks (and using it for 4 - xmas present).

I had a couple of crashes during games where the screen would go purple and the sound would loop, but its happened again tonight 4 times in the space of an hour as I was trying to sort the problem with changes to driver etc.

Looks like this which I assume is a gfx card problem -

Gutted to be honest as it was a good card while it lasted.

That's a sickener, mate. At least I managed to get shot of mine quickly enough to get a refund.

Have you tried using something like EVGA-Precision to underclock the core/memory to see if you can isolate the problem? Also you could use it to up the fan speed to see if the extra cooling helps.

I get the same thing when I OC my 260 to much, screen goes a solid colour and a hard reset is required, its fine if I don't OC to much. I guess since yours is playing up at stock speed, an RMA is the only action to take.

You got your GTX280 up and running yet, mate?

Yes. :D

I got a BFG OC edition with Farcry 2, etc. Very, very pleased especially at the price I paid. Now I just hope I get a refund on my GTX260 RMA, or I'll be in trouble.

Forgot to add, temps are much cooler than the EVGA GTX260 SSC I had.

Only just got my refund, it took nearly 2 weeks so don't panic.

Looks like you got a good deal on the 280 :D

Not yet, will use Ntune to clock it down to 260 stock speeds and see its its stable then.

I had exactly the same thing happen to my EVGA GTX260 SSC card, there seems to be a lot of these GTX260 pre-overclocked cards with this problem...
Download and run FurMark in stability mode;

Just did that, card reached 81C after 127 seconds and then bombed out with the screen going a constant fur colour...which did make me smile for a second or two:D:mad:

I think that's pretty conclusive then if it bombs in furmark?

I've seen a couple of 260s which do this when they get warm - but not too warm - unless the fan is set very high (over 60%) which leads me to suspect that some part of the card (VRMs maybe) isn't getting adequately cooled.

I found my BE crashed soon after reaching 80C. It was completely stable when I dropped the core down below 650. The memory was stable at the factory overclock.

Fan @ 100% (what a noise!) and default factory overclock applied, I let Furmark run for 1000s where the GPU temp reached 68C.

If you can replicate the crash normally and high fan speed is making it more stable then I think the problem is as I said some part of the card (not the core or memory) isn't being cooled adequately. As the operating temps are well within acceptable limits.

I can get it too crash within minutes of running the stability test in Furmark, or playing CODWAW. As far as I'm concerned it doesn't meet spec so needs to be replaced, I'm just worried I'll now be without a card whilst this one gets swallowed up by XFX's awful customer service dept :D

Update - the card is getting RMA'd and as expected XFX have a nuts system with the supplier I purchased from (obviously not OCUK) where the supplier needs to test it, it then needs to be tested by XFX and both partiees need to find a fault before they will offer a replacement. And to top it off this will take around 3 weeks (or longer I suspect) and when I do get a replacment its going to be another XFX card, obvioulsy I'd rather not touch another XFX card with a barge pole as if the next one is bad the whole process starts again. I've been told though if I get 3 bad ones in 6 months I can change to another card... well thats a relief

Lessons learnt from this - buy from OCUK who have a decent returns policy, and dont buy XFX cards.

It might have been better to have gone straight to XFX to be honest and miss out the store (I think I know where you got it from, there's been a ton of complaints on their forums and I am currently fighting to get a refund from them).
I requested a refund and they sent me a trashed replacement in a citylink bag with no protection. The replacement was definitely a return/second hand (security seal was missing, game inside gone, DVI>VGA adapter gone, finger prints all over it, etc).
It will be interesting to see what condition your replacement will be in, it seems loads of people are getting used/trashed returns from that shop.
I started the RMA on the 5th of Jan and I still don't have a refund, absolute nightmare. I gave up and bought a GTX280 from OcUK while I wait.

Good luck and don't accept any returns from them that are not packaged properly and in NEW conidition.

When you return something. Do you need to pay for the postage? and you dont get a refund when something found wrong?

I had to return 2 items to a company in the past month and i had to cover my own postage.

As far as I'm aware you should get the cost of the return refunded, I'm waiting on a response from the supplier to this very question.
