Advice/tips on Prague please

Myself and the girlfriend are off to Prague for a short break next week. I know a lot of people here have been, so was just after any tips? Will we get by alright without speaking the language? I can speak a little German if that helps.. :o

Any recommended restaurants to try? It's my birthday on our second night so would be good to go somewhere 'special' (but er.. not pricey by any means!).

We're staying in an apartment 5mins from the old town square. What would be the easiest way to get back to the airport from there?

Any other advice and/or sights to see? Thanks :)
 
I'm staying in Prague at the end of Feb for a holiday with my mates - we're staying in an apartment on Wenceslas Square.
We're probably be there doing different things (romantic girlfriend break versus weekend booze trip for me and my mates) but will be keeping an eye on this thread as I would love some good bars/restaurants to goto!
 
My mate and his GF just game back from there 3 days ago. He didnt really say much apart from he nearly got arrested on the Metro for not having a ticket. He had to cough up 700 of their money to sort it and he nearly had to pay that again for his GF, luckily he managed to get away from paying the other fine, still it was around £25 for not having a ticket.

I've never seen the appeal of paying for flights and a hotel in a lovely destination only to spend a week getting trashed with mates. I'd much rather actually see a place. Funnily enough, my grirlfriend has been to Prague once before. She said the only time she encountered any trouble was in fact from a group of English guys.. typical.

There's a bus / metro combination available to get from the airport to Namesti Republiky, which costs about £1 each. Well, you buy a 75 minute ticket which is more than enough. That's quite close to the square. It can be a bit daunting when you get there though, German doesn't help at all. I was amazed at how lost I was with a complete lack of language knowledge...

Once you get used to the transport system, you'll realise it's amazing. Hop on and off stuff, providing you've got a valid ticket if you get checked. We managed not to for the whole week though.
 
Get a taxi to your hotel from the airport which wil cost about 500-600 Czech crowns. On the way back use the metro followed by a bus which takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Everyone speaks English and you'll be greeted in English which is strange at first. You won't need a phrase book as everything is in English on menus etc.

Take lots of money because Prague is expensive and the exchange rate is way out of our favour.

It's going to be frikkin' cold out there as well so make sure you've got plenty to wrap up warm in :D

Other than that, enjoy the roast duck, roast pork knee, goulash, dumplings, beer and coffee houses :)

OMG I LOVE GOULASH AND DUMPLINGS... actually the best thing ever :eek:
 
Been to CZ quite a few times now and I would say that you should take public transport for sure. Buy your ticket from tourist information at the airport, they will write stuff down for you and give you directions. The underground is a great way to get about and quite amazing due to the frequency of the things. Make sure you buy a ticket and get it stamped though!!!!

As far as tips go I would say don't drink around either of the squares as the prices are a rip off. Venture down all of the side streets, lots of lovely places to visit there. Check out the jazz band that play the old town square every day around 2 or 3pm, they're pretty funny. Hammer the mulled wine while on the streets.....it's the business.
 
Go to the museum of sexaul instruments just off the main square, seriously, its really interesting.

Up the main road towards the big museum there is a place called the beer factory which is quite fun.

When we went we just walked down all the back streets, visit as many beer halls as you can, they are all great!

The public transport system is excellent, and so cheap! We got the bus from the airport to a metro stating then into town from there. But we stayed right next to a metro station so might be easier if you get at taxi.

People are great fun, just watch out for pick pockets.

Wish I could offer more but I was so drunk I couldnt remember the names of anywhere we went!

Awesome place and you'll love it! No worries on the language, it's a tourist place after all. Do the tour of the castle one day, and would recommend the Live Jazz boat dinner cruise! Although might be a bit cold next week. There is a restaurant called 'Triton' I think and absolutely amazing, it's set like a cave but very fancy - bit pricey but very much worth it, maybe surprise the g/f?

Which apartments you staying in? We got the Apartment people to sort out a Taxi back to the Airport. Its a fair old trek outside Prague City Centre.

I have a sneaking suspicion that you will be in the Castle View apartments, or the ones near the Park out by Andel. Andel has a metro station and the transport into Wenceslas square takes no time.

As for food, we ate at a place called Gusto's, which is a Tram ride out of the town centre. Food was good as was the value. We were on stag the two times we have been out there so it wasn't really a trip for sit down meals ;) We ate in pubs mostly.

As for the sights, well, the whole city is a sight in itself. Check out the Castle, the Old town and Square for starters. The clock in the old town square is pretty spectacular.
 
Speaking English is fine, German won't really get you anywhere :)

My favourite restaurant is Restaurante Brasileiro in Slovanský dům on Na Příkopě 22 (between the bottom of Wenceslas square and Namesti Republiky). It's not fancy but it's clean, well furnished and decorated. For something like 700Kc it's an all you can eat buffet and they'll come around with all different meats on skewers and cut it off onto your plate, it's really good :) Like mentioned by Rotty I've heard good things about the Bellvue but not been there myself yet.

Good food is easy to find here though, goulash with dumplings, svickova, sausages, meats of all kinds and cheap beer :)

Easiest way to get to the centre from the Airport would be taxi and is about 700Kc (ask the driver how much before). Cheaper would be to get the 119 bus from outside the airport to Dejvicka, jump on the Metro from Dejvicka to Starometska (Old Town) that'll cost you 26Kc.

If you get caught on the metro say you have a valid ticket but you left it in your hotel room or whatever, they'll give you a ticket that you can take to the public transport office to show your valid ticket and pay a 50Kc fine, you don't need to do this as you don't live here and can just forget about it ;) Make sure you have a ticket though, it's a damn good transport system and the small fee for a few day pass it's worth it.

Thanks for the tips guys. We've already arranged pickup from the airport for ~£20 so that seems about right. I think i need to look into the metro more by the sounds of it :D Definitely looking forward to goulash and dumplings!
 
Got back from Prague a week ago. It was okay - but I wouldn't go again, unless it was at Christmas time.

Find a place in Old Town that is a Davidoff Café, by far the best coffee I've ever had in my life. Also, if you want nice food go to a place right by the Astronomical Clock (you have to see the clock, it was *amazing* ;)) called Krakova (think that's right, it's called The Goat in English). Staff are rude, but the food is amazing - *particuarly* the steak!

The Zoo is a nice way to spend half a day, and is the '7th best in the World' - worth seeing, and only ~£4.00 to get in.

As for it being cold, it was warmer in England when we got there, and during the stay. Your mileage may vary.

My girlfriend and myself stayed in the Riverside Prague hotel, really, really, nice. Even the basic room (we upgraded to a suite on the last night to treat ourselves, and it was unreal how good it was).

By far and away the best advice is not to go out drinking in Old Town; I think they've been scarred by the hordes of stag nights and as such they're generally pretty rude (even when we were making *every* effort to be as polite as possible, in Czech). Instead, go the other side of the river, loads of nice bars and jazz clubs etc - and more importantly all the staff are much friendlier.

That reminds me about a small jazz cafe I went to near the castle, I'll try and find the name/adress if you think it might be worth a shout? It was a tourist place, but there was locals and the prices were reasonable.
 
Prague is an amazing place, you're bound to have a great time.

I'd advise going to Náměstí Míru‎ it's where I stay when I'm in Czech and there are some cracking restaurants there, cheap too. 2 Italians, a Chinese, many Czech restaurants, its great.

Try and speak some Czech when you're out there. Even if its just pivo prosim (beer please) . They appreciate it, and the Czechs are the nicest people you'll come across.

Best sights are the Charles Bridge (if you can get to Club Lavka and admire it at night from the terrace even better), Astronomical Clock and possibly the Cathedral/Castle if you have time. Don't break your neck to get to the sights though, just admire the city, the people and the Pilsner Urquell.

No that's just them being Czech lol, customer service isn't great in lots of places but don't hold it against them, they really are nice and friendly once you get to know them :)

And I agree about the zoo, winter may not be the best time to go but it really is worth it, I'm probably going to get a year ticket next time I go :)

Wrap up warm as it's going to be between 0 and -5 you may even be lucky enough to catch some snow as it warmed up a bit but it's got a bit colder recently. :cool:
