It's been a while since I looked into it, what's the current favourite drive for upgrading to 320GB?
Will 7200rpm make any difference, or is it still not worth it?

i also read that 7200rpm makes little difference, somewhere in the region of 5-10% increase in speed.

i settled for a 320gb, 5400rpm seagate drive and its been fine :)

Cheers for the info guys, I'll see how my cash is going later on in the month and then grab the best 5400rpm one I can afford.
Anyone tried a SSD in it yet?
Not that I can afford one, but I'm curious to know if they're compatible.

They work but the write speeds are dire so you lose as much time saving stuff as you gain loading it.

I recommend whichever brand 5400 drive you are comfortable with. The benefits of 7200 are barely noticeable and don't justify the extra cost, they also generate more heat so i imagine it'll make your PS3 louder (got nothing to base that on though, purely speculation)

My drive maker of choice has been Western Digital, ever since I owned a Raptor many moons ago. I'd have a Scorpio blue in there if I were you.

I got a 500GB WD (5400rpm) in mine.

I literally typed in "best PS3 HDD upgrade" in Google and bought a recommendation that kept popping up in the results.

I know nothing about 2.5" drives, are they all single platter?

Most Hardrives on the market are the same tbh (for the purpose of this upgrade). Buy the cheapest one that is 5400rpm that works in your PS3.

I hate all this "that brand hard drive is better" crap as no-one here has owned enough hard drives of a single type/style to make any sort of informed decision on it (compared to the sheer number of drives manufactured and the very limited use a consumer gets out of such devices in home computers etc).

Just a quick few notes-

for the ps3 cache seems more important then speed

SSD's do work and give awesome advantages when installing downloaded demos etc but few in game, just not worth the costs.

There has been no cases so far to my knowledge where a 7200 drive has caused heat issues, newer ones actually seem to run cooler then the old 5400's.

Noise of the drive depends on quality just a like a normal PC or laptop buy cheap=get cheap.

The heat difference between a 7200 vs. 5400rpm drive is 2-5C at best, and the speed advantage of 7200rpm is minimal nowadays due to aerial density.

After a bit of thought I'm considering the 7200rpm ones again, I have PlayTv and if it were to speed up the load time on that by a few seconds, then it'd be worth it in my opinion. It didn't occur to me until this morning when I switched on the system to watch BBC Breakfast, I'd want to see a test done first though, I've no idea if the PlayTv boot time is due to slow HDD access, or simply firing up the decoder.
