3 Grand on the table. What would *you* buy?

The EPA quotes fuel mileage for a 302ci (that's 4.9L for the mathematically challenged) Crown Vic at 16mpg in town, 24 at highway speeds. Now, those figures are using US gallons so converting to Imperial gives ~19.2 and ~28.8 respectively.

That seems very good for a 5L car, until you realise it's producing only 215bhp/275 lbft. That said I'm sure it will keep doing it for many hundreds of thousands of miles, but sadly the car won't get any less fugly in that time.

I'm not a yank car hater in general, I would certainly love to own one of the more modern muscle cars, but this particular car represents everything bad about the older ones (IMO of course).

Oh no! It doesn't have masses of horsepower! However would I cope?

Probably by bolting on Cleveland heads and a new inlet manifold to make it into a Boss 302 motor and shoot for 300bhp....

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and when you're driving the car you don't have to behold it ;)

It wasn't my intention to poke fun at the (admittedly rather dismal) specific power output, simply stating the reason why such a large engine manages to achieve quite decent economy. Looking up the numbers it's actually surprisingly light (for a tank ;) ) and certainly no slouch in standard form (~1800kg, 8.6s 0-60).

I still wouldn't have one if given it, but in the very unlikely event of that happening I'll bare you in mind :D

I would buy a car which i am considering buying to offload all of my mileage too and regain some economy - a ~2001 E39 530i Sport. Tough for the money yes, but doable.

For 3 grand

Why are you so desperate to buy a complete nail of an E39 all of a sudden?

I would buy a 2004 Mercedes S500 cos some dude from Birmingham had one on Autotrader the other day for £4k, he'd take £3k for cash and it was well shiney so obviously thats how much ones which are in good nick are worth.
