So it's tradition for the woman to take the mans surname, but if your wife to be wanted you to either double barrel or change your surname completely would you?

No i wouldn't she should change her name.

A friend of mine changed his name when he got married as his father ran away when he was a child so his surname was not important to him.

I guess it depends on the situation, as people have pointed out already. Personally I wouldn't have wanted to change my name.

No I wouldn't but I do know someone who did this. A (to all intents and purposes) gay man, marrying into a very wealthy and prominent family, acting as a reverse-beard (is this a mirkin?) for a female heiress.

Depends on the surname tbh, mines bland and boring, if i married say 'Julia Awesomepants' for example i would most certainly take the surname.

I didn't but then my wife was happy with my surname. However it is only a name so if it really mattered to my other half then I would have changed it quite happily. My surname was more interesting than hers though so she was happy to swap.

i can think of one circumstance where i'd consider this

if she's the last of her family line, and her name will die without it, and it really means a lot to her.
