UK's LOWEST PRICE - Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 GFX Card - £144.99 +VAT

rolypolyman, NO!

New cards are coming in March, and could well have 1 and a half times the performance due to 1200 shaders, What's more 40nm will enable higher clocks - maybe even 2* the performance! AMD produced 40nm cards in early December, so they'll be finetuning them now (which, given the amazing yields AMD have, will result in even more boosted clocks!)- we might even be able to expect a february launch!

The benefits over a 9800GTX are very small, and not worth anywhere near £160. you'll lose PhysX, which is being supported in far more games, and CUDA - think of folding at home!. Your E6750 will bottleneck it unless you overclock to about 4Ghz...

...therefore getting one of the currently still unknown next generation cards would be of rather less use than you suggest.

Hams Hall is the hub all our goods go to before being distributed around the country.:)

If your goods are stored locally, that means my card (and many other people's purchases over time) was driven from Stoke to Birmingham and back to Stoke again, maybe passing within a hundred yards of the delivery address.

They could have dropped it off at 6 this evening and I could have had it before my long weekend off instead of afterwards.

Next time, I'll flag down passing DHL vans and ask them if they have anything for me :)

A quality 500w unit is normally more than up to the job. Hard to say without trying a different PSU / 4807 1GB as to what the culprit is.

so is the sweex PSU considered to be a "quality" brand?

think i may buy a new "quality" branded PSU tomorrow just too see but i'm going to be seriously peev'd off if i do and it doesnt sort out the problem

As I said earlier in the thread, you will need to get your ordering in tonight or tommorrow or we may run out!

if it does still fail expect the card back at the shop for tuesday, hope there's still going to be some left if not what u going to do for me?

will keep updated on my progress, turning out to be rather expensive card this.

Just cancelled my order, came to my senses and since I can't shift my current card I might as well keep it and see what the next lot of cards bring to the table...

Well, as Geoff Boycott says, "You don't get owt for n'owt" and sweex seem to charge "n'owt". I don't doubt that somewhere someone will have one of their PSU's still running after x years of 24x7. Me I'd rather rely on my Corsair PSU...

i have no problem with that and i'm more than willing to spend the extra money on a "quality" PSU just hope thats what the problem is :) not had a problem with it up till now.

edit: man my avatar is lame why can't i upload or use my own off site one?

no sure whether to go for this or wait for the new cards (Are these due in march?)

I'm assuming there will be no performance increase in most games/applications over my 4870 PCS except where I'm struggling for VRam (Oblivion with QTP3 which is my main game to mod and play)

No. Vague statements about "Q2 2009", i.e. April/May/June, probably towards the end of that. If I had to bet, I'd bet on late May.

But hey, they might be early. If one company can get theirs out even a couple of weeks before the other, they will. Lots to money to be had from selling the only next generation graphcs cards, even if it is only for a fortnight.

According to our well informed sources, Nvidia's next generation 40nm chip has been taped out and is getting ready for its launch.

There will be at least two new 40nm SKUs and Nvidia is aiming for a launch in early Q2 2009. Some sources indicate that Nvidia might even make it to March, which is the last month of Q1 but this will be a tough thing to achieve.

ATI has also taped out its RV740 40nm mainstream chip and it looks that Nvidia plans to launch entry level and mainstream products first before it goes to 40nm with high-end. Currently it looks like it won't be until at least summer time, roughly early Q3, before we see new high-end cards, at least from ATI.

I am sure that has already been asked and answered, but I had a quick skim through and couldn't see anything, so apologies in advance.. But does this card come with any P-ATA to PCI-E power adaptors in the box, as I have currently got all mine plugged into a 4870X2 so some 'interesting' power cabling will be required to get this tri-fired up.

well the problems i'm having with my 4780 are not to do with power thats for sure and which i kind of thought in the 1st place anyway. i went out and bought a new 750W PSU and its still exactly the same, my system will not boot up and gives me the same error messege via the onboard lights on the mobo.

i have even tried powering the mobo and HD with the 650W and used the new 750w on the card alone.

its either one of 2 things i'm thinking now, the card is goosed and no working correctly or my MSI Neo2 FR mobo doesn't like the ATI card (would be strange that if this was the case). i dont have access to another mobo to test this theory out and i'm certainly not going to go out and buy a new one becasue as far as i'm concerned there is nothing wrong with this mobo and the only time my system doesn't work is with the ATI card in it.

next step is to test the card on a different mobo i suppose but i dont know if i can be bothered with the hassle anymore i'm feeling very disappointed at the moment and very peev'd off.

what should i do?

bah cant even send someone a PM on here? looks like i'm going to have to phone u guys regarding this matter then.

My fiscal stimulus

Been waiting to spend my £500 xmas bonus since before christmas finally the deal i have been waiting for which fits into my common sense policy of "NO GRAPHICS CARD IS WORTH MORE THAN £200" so snapped it up pronto. I would have had the GTX280 but it just didn't drop it price enough so got this instead to upgrade from my hd2900xt 900/900 and i must say the performance increase much more than i anticipated so very pleased with my purchase the cat9.1 installed into vista64 with 8gigs no problems at all just got to make my water block for it to see what it will do.

I just installed my sapphire 4870 that arrived this morning. i did have a powercolor 3870 512Mb. A couple of nights ago i run the 'into the pink' benchmark and i have just run it again with my new 4870 and here are the scores just so you can compare the two cards.

powercolor HD3870 512mb
Full HD score = 7239

Sapphire HD4870 1Gb
Full HD score = 11806

So as you can see quite an improvement.

The powercolor 3870 had a fan that could not be controlled via any software and unless you installed a fan controller the fan would allways run at 100% but was still not very loud. The sapphire 4870, when the fan gets to 50% + is certainly more audible than the 3870 but to me this is not a problem as the when i game i have headphones on as my pc is in my living room (it's my GF who will hear it :D).

Thank god for the voice of reason and the missus is relieved as well. I am now able to resist the temptation to upgrade to the 1Gb 4870...or am I.:D
