Tomorrow night I will be doing the photography for a night clubs re-launch party and since my D-2-D photography is mainly Nature and Weddings I feel I might be a little out of my comfit zone (but who passes up a job, right?), do any of you guys have any advice or tips for this type of photography?

Thanks
M,

Strong flash, take pics of dancing under the lights, and try and get as many groups of attractive women as possible to pose for group pics.

Have a look at other people's nightclub photos and you'll see a lot of use of long exposures (that you normally wouldn't consider handholding) with the flash to give light trails but relatively sharp people.

Use a fast lens (1.8-2.8) and a good flash with a diffuser. should remove blur while giving some good shots.

Also get in close on your subjects (2 steps closer than you'd normally be), makes club photos look more natural.

Oh i remember one thing, use a flash and long exposure (1-2s) so the person in front is nice and sharp but everyone around is all blurry. Looks frickin sweet. Best with IS lenses if you not using a tripod/monopod.

Well I wont be using a Tripod as imo its not practical for a confined space like a night club, my fastest lens is my Nikkor 24-70 2.8 which I expect to be more then enough for the situations the night throws at me and I've got an SB-900 so a strong flash wont be a problem, I guess I should take a look on some sites to see if I can get some inspiration (does anyone know any?)

Thanks so far

M,

Sounds good. I think the only really advantage of a faster glass, like the 50mm 1.4, is if you could get away without flash. Depending on your camera (a D3/d700...) you could push at 1600-3200 at f/1.4 and get good results. Otherwise just use the flash and 2.8...

Once you get past the terrible intro, though there shouldn't be an intro this week. there's the gallery for the club i work for. choose a themed night and pics are there

You might even find a few pics of steven sullivan if any of you know who he is?

if u can use your flash on a lead so u can hold it up and point it down on the people this works best for me for using a flash in a night club

also try out a load of shots in all diffrent parts of the club to see what works best depending on there lighting and stuff

Well I'm off to the club in just over an hour and I don't think I've ever been so nervous! Anyone got any last minute advice or words of encouragement they could pass my way

M,

Well its done, got over 1000 pics so should at least be able to pick a handful of good ones, was very different to the types of photography i have done in the past and took some getting use to, was awesome fun though!

M,

Here's one to wet your appatite - not the best photo i took on the night by far, but i guess it ticks the boxes that you guys were asking for

M,

(I'm not sure what the sizing limitations are here on OC so have kept it small to keep everyone happy).

there are no size limits :) i put most of my stuff on with a max edge of 1024 and have never had a complaint. your photo is WAY too small to see though
