Why do people think Newcastle are a small club?

theres a town in the north east called Bishop Auckland, they have won the world cup, explain that and they are non league!

dire football eh, they won the likes of italy and brazil and are non leaguers, get your fact right mate ;)

The past is the portion of time that has already occurred.

It is not the future. It is not now. It is the past. Things that have happened in the past are not comparable to now.

It West Auckland.

Apparently they have a replica in a pub there, i've never been so not sure if its true, even though my home is like 4mile from it.

Bishop Auckland football club has quite an impressive history for how obscure it is now

The past is what makes history so great, if there was no past you would have no great grandparents, if there was no past the future would never change.

2) a massive stadium
Seats don't score goals.
4) in 3 seasons running we finished 3rd,4th and 5th
Well done. Still not as good as MU/Chelsea/Arsenal/Liverpool have acheived. Even Leeds United, a 3rd division club, managed better (3rd/4th/4th) around the turn of the decade
7) we have the most feirce derby matches in sunderland, and boro too
Debatable. There's arguably teams in the lower leagues with just as fierce local rivalries, that doesn't make them big clubs.
8) people forget man utd chased us in the league back in the days
Big wow. Man United were chasing Norwich City back in the day, does that make them a big club too?

we are now classed as a small club
No, you're just not classed as a big club by everyone.

sky sports always go on about can villa break into the top four, we've been there done that, do we get a mention?!
Newcastle don't get a mention at the moment, because they are 1 point above the relegation zone. Villa get a mention because, er, they are in 4th place and have twice as many points as you.

Back in the day, you did get a mention. There used to be a "big 6" (MU/Arsenal/Newcastle/Liverpool/Leeds/Chelsea) - now it's just a big four. When Everton broke into the top 4 they got a mention. Go back a year or two, and there was a lot of talk about whether Spurs would break into the top four. There is no hidden agenda, it's just based on where teams are in the league.

Why is it the well spoken man mark pratt hughes and judas harry redknapp always on sky sports?
Dunno, I'm sure it's all part of an anti-Newcastle publicity campaign though. They are famed throughout the land for it.

We may be a small club based on trophies
How silly of people to categorise clubs based on tropies.

we are not like spurs who think they are the best, the fact is the best teams in the league over the last 15 years have been:

1) man utd
2) liverpool
3) newcastle
4) arsenal
5) everton
6) blackburn
7) aston villa
8) west ham
9) spurs

In the last 15 years Arsenal have 3 league titles. Newcastle have none. How can they be below them? Chelsea have two titles, and yet don't even feature on the list, behind clubs like Blackburn and West Ham who have been relegated during that time.

Take a look here for a pretty decent guide to who the best teams in the Premiership have been: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All-time_FA_Premier_League_table

I wish Newcastle fans would stop complaining.

Newcaste's fans are not any better or more passionate then any other football fan who cares about his club. It is offensive to the other 91 football clubs to say that.

There are just a lot of Newcastle fans, as you are the only club in the city.
Your derby matches are not the "biggest" derby matches, All the derby matches are big matches, Sheffield Wednesday V Sheffield United, Manchester United V Manchester City, Liverpool V Everton...

You might have finished high in the league, but you still didn't win it, and when was the last time you won a title / cup ?

There are other clubs with history ? Have Newcastle won the european cup ? Nottingham Forest achieved this.

I agree, the past is pretty damn important, but for the majority of the time, its not where you're from, it's where you're at. That matters.

I don't think we're a big club any more.

I think your surmise that being a Toon fan is a headache, is the most accurate thing you've said in this thread.

I've got to the stage now of total apathy, there's so much wrong with the club that maybe relegation would do us some good.

At the start of every season for the last 10 years we've expected things to be different, not ground breaking 'win-the-world-cup' different, just an improvement over the previous season. By the end of each season we've ended up in a worse situation than we were in before. There's been a lot of reasons for it and plenty of people to blame, if you're that way inclined, the simple fact is, to everyone else we're a laughing stock and I'm not really surprised.

My biggest hope for the club is that we get some stability in the next few years, even if it means we're stable in the middle of the table.

We don't need huge signings (not that we could afford them anyway) but we do need reasonable players that want to play football for us. We need to forget the fancy stuff and start getting the basics right, then we can start to think about bigger and better things.

The match on Sunday was the first spirited performance I've seen from the lads for a very long time and even then we couldn't get simple things right.

If you can't get the basics of passing, tackling, crossing and shooting right (you know, playing football ;)) then what hope do you have of winning anything.

The average attendance at St James Park in 1980-81 was 16,001.
10 years later, you're average attendance was 16,879.

In 1979, there was 7,134 who came to watch you play.

Thought you had the best fans in the universe ? where were they all then ?

I take offense at being called "less of a fan" then Newcastle fans.

I care about my club as much as any other fan.
Just because I'm not obese and stand with my shirt off at a game doesn't mean I'm any less of a fan.
