sorry guys, another dreamy thread!

But it isn't a banger...no matter if it's your opinion or not, from what I can see its a very well looked after Mondeo in very good condition and will go on to do many many many miles.

One of Dad's runabouts is a Maestro, its on an L plate, it's done 70k and has mould growing off the panels....its worth, at best...£30

THAT is a banger

With all due respect teaboy5, that is an old mondeo, and is a "banger" to me. This is just to me though, as it is from what I can tell in nice condition, and looks smart. My idea of a banger isn't really typical though, obviously, as most people see a banger as something like a metro. But I just use the term sort of exaggerated for anything I don't find desirable and is a bit old. But I think your all making a meal out of one word I said. I would like to get back on topic please.

LOL

Whats your 35yo spitfire going to be compared to that mondeo?

It's probably not even worth that. I never said it's worth 8k now, we were talking about the cost it was new.

So what? So if i spent over 4k on my Fiesta it wouldn't be a banger? Price has nothing to do with being a banger or not. A rusted out old MK1 Lotus Cortina sold recently for 12k, thats 12k for a rusted out shell - it's still a heap. Just a very valuable one.

Same difference, cheap Korean crap, shame you couldn't use your expertise to point her in the right direction.

It's lasted for nearly 10 years so far, not broken down once, is cheap to run, and is all my mum needs. I was 8 when she got it, I wasn't really in a position to help.

But you have said yourself you know nothing about cars mechanics so how would you differentiate a banger and a minter with only price to go on?

Because I more or less go on personal opinion, but that's all the matters, it's my purchase after all, if something looks shoddy and crap to me I won't get it. Simple as, I don't need to justify what I call a crap car to you, especially as that has nothing to do with the thread topic.

So you would be having above average intelligence... compared to everyone, not average. Yes, that's clearly a lie.

No, I am above the average, therefore my intelligence is relative to the average, and is thus being compared to the average in order for me to say that I am above it.

Just.. wow. I've never seen anyone actually argue how clever they are on the internet before. Why do you feel the need to do that?

You could pay £20,000 for one if you wanted what exactly is your point?

Broadspeed will supply you with a brand spanking new Matiz 'S' for £4837 on the road, right now. Infact, they also have pre-registered examples on 58 plates for £3978.

So there you go - a virtually brand new car thats a banger according to you and your amazing wealth of car knowledge.

A Matiz pretty much is a banger. But my mum got hers nearly 10 years ago when they weren't so cheap. But that's besides the point, I don't really have a set set of "rules" for how I define a banger. Sure you can name lots of cars under 4k which are not bangers, a lot are though in my opinion. But I don't care about the definition of a "banger", it neither interests me not is it relevant to the thread.

You still aren't in a position to help anyone choose a car.

So when you say you know a lot about cars what you are really trying to say is "I know a lot about which cars I think look nice"

No, I am above the average, therefore my intelligence is relative to the average, and is thus being compared to the average in order for me to say that I am above it.

Who has told you this? Your mother?

I'm under the impression that Yanto is 17 and you have to be 18 to have an eBay or Paypal account. So it's fair to say he may well have never used it.

Do you seriously still reckon this guy is genuine? It's great to see you offernig him constructive, serious advice and you obviously know his stuff but don't you even get a small inkling that you might be completely wasting your time?

So you are changing the definition of words now?

For someone of 'Above average intelligence' you really fail to differentiate between words such as:

Old
Banger
Classic
Boring
Budget
Mechanical knowledge

If you expect to advance in this world you can't you use whatever meaning of words you feel is right, can you?

No, he's just a dreamy kid and doesn't know what he wants yet. So what? I was one of them once. Difference is I didn't have the internet ganging up on me back then.

There are a lot of really poor arguments against on here and I don't mind sitting here picking them apart.

Edit: I don't mind eating my words if I'm proved wrong and Yanto is actually a 40 year old leather wearing weirdo and is sitting here masturbating over our comments ;)

Out of three people in this thread that profess to know quite a lot about classics, two have said that they don't think it is a bad idea, one has said it could be a bad idea. Hardly as bad as you make it seem.

I guess I have also found out the hard way that these forums are not the best for classics. However, thank you very much indeed to everyone who has posted some very helpful things :)

Avoid classics like the plague unless you have the time, effort, and money to keep them going, plus the patience of a saint. They are that bad, both neighbours of ours and especially my father are into their classics and they have all had numerous problems and have spent enough fixing them.

These things will just break down randomly for no resaon at all.
