Hi all,

I'm due to build my PC in 2 weeks. Just trying to get a rough list together of what I want to get.

Core i7 920
ASUS Rampage II Extreme X58
6GB (3x2GB) Corsair Dominator 1600Mhz
GTX 285 / 295 / 4870X2 (Undecided)
NEC MultiSync 24WMGX3 Professional Gaming 24"
PSU / HDD (Undecided)
Vista 64 Ultimate
CPU / GPU High End Water-cooling

What is the best graphics card to get for my budget?

Is it better to get a single card so you don't get micro stutter?

Is there anything new coming round the corner so I could just get a gtx 260 / 4870 to keep me going till then so I don't have to mess around with waterblocks too?

I want something that will play every game at 1920x1200 max settings, [unless new gpu coming soon].

I appreciate this has been asked a ridiculous amount of times but I just want to get an up to date opinion from people.

Thanks all,

RoEy

I think the XFX 295GTX OcUK got on offer this week for £402.49 would be a great choice. Its the most powerful gpu out atm and i doubt it'll go lower then that price for a while nor do i expect any new cards anytime soon as the 295 only come out a 3? weeks ago.

For every game on the market at max settings (including AA), you're really looking at a 4870X2 or a GTX295. They are very expensive though, and bear in mind the drawbacks that multi-GPU can bring, such as poor driver support and high power consumption.

New cards are due beginning of Q2-ish I've heard.....so I think your best bet right now is to buy a 4870 1GB or a 260-216 and use that for now. They're still very powerful cards.

4870X2 or a 295GTX, whatever takes your fancy. However I would argue that the 295GTX isn't worth the £80 odd over the X2.

I would go 4870X2, you wont notice a huge amount of difference to the 295, and its in the middle between the 260/4870 and 295 in terms of price, which means if a new gen comes out, you could probs justify it :p

Thanks for info so far.

Just makes it extra difficult for me as I want to water cool whatever gpu I get. Might get the 4870x2 as that should last me a while with a koolance water block.

Does it suffer from micro stutter or is it a myth?

I 'think' new cards are due around april, you might want to pick up something cheap and just hold on till then, a block for either 4870x2 or 295 would be around £80 so bear that in mind

myself and a few other people i know have 4870x2's and we have never seen microstutter, i think i read that it was only the older NV cards (such as gx2's) and old drivers for the ATI that suffered from it (like 8.7 or something)?

I could be wrong on the above but nothing but a happy 4870x2 owner here without microstutter :D

As your going for WC as well the blocks are already out for the x2 and you have plenty of choice, the aqua computers block makes me drool! Will be a while before you get 295 blocks (unless someone can correct me!)

Cheers for info. I'm currently looking at the Koolance waterblock for the 4870x2.

Looks sweeeeet.

Thanks again to everyone.
