sorry guys, another dreamy thread!

You've already said you had a crash?

but great zero airbags for you didn't mean you smashed your face in. Doesn't mean I don't know of people that have had their faces smashed in without them or statistics showing otherwise.
Yes, what's your point? You're making out I crash all the time and only airbags would save me when that's not the case. Airbags might save you on the motorway in a really nasty smash but seatbelts will do the same job almost all of the time.

Yant, the quote in your sig,

"Imagination is more important than knowledge" - Albert Einstein"

is amusingly apt for this thread.

I guess the biggest problem these days is putting a classic car up against a modern car in a head on or something. That always used to sit in the back of my head with my most recent mk1 Escort. Mind you, the kit car that (when it's finally finished being built) will replace it has a chassis made from a box section steel frame so it will be even worse. :D

The main problem with this thread though is that it's Yantorsen. He won't get any of these cars, he's just pulling your plonker.

Can't we all just get along :(

The matter of the fact is the op doesn't have a licence and doesn't even look likely to have one anytime soon. I'm not going to argue against classics because i love them, i think they drive, look drive and even smell great (nothing smells like old leather and dusty carpets :p). Its just they are not ideal for new drivers. The main problem is the fact that modern cars are built like tanks, if that spitty hits a modern car, the modern car probably won't even feel it and yantorsen will have to drag himself out of a wreck.

I'm willing to get along with everybody, if they are also willing to get along with me. Janesy I apologize for any offensive comments I may have made towards you but I was irritated and perhaps acted immaturely in the circumstances. You can consider anything you have said to me as forgotten as well.

You think I'm foolish for it, but I'm honestly willing to take that risk. I will only be using it on motorways and high speed roads rarely, it will mostly just be used on inner city roads during the week.

I know I don't have a license yet, but I think it's good to start thinking about these things early, so I can have a target figure to save up to, and so I can learn as much about the car I am going to get as possible so I don't end up buying a dud.

Thats all fair and well but you keep showing yourself up when you make silly comments like all cars under 4k are bangers when that is clearly incorrect.

Do as much research as you want but if i was you i'd be pouring that time in learning to drive and getting yourself ready for the theory test. You don't have to jump in a car right after your test, i brought my 1st car 3 months after passing and it didn't kill me.

Perhaps that comment was also a bit short sited and I probably used the wrong word, but I didn't realise everyone was going to make such of a meal of it. Bottom line of that point was though that most newer cars in my price range aren't really that desirable. Well, at least not to me anyway.

I will get my car whenever I can afford it, and know for sure what I want. The spitfire is at the top of my current short-list.

Why not spend the money on actual lessons and passing, other wise you are going to have a banger you wont be able to drive.

Plenty of desirable cars for that money but thats besides the point.

What is your shortlist?

Because I'm getting those for my birthday.

All of them?

I spent £600 in lessons and i passed within 3 months

How many lessons? You might need more than what you are getting.

I know you want a car and all but your priority should be passing your test then getting the car.

That is my priority, I don't know how many lessons yet, however many I need really, it'll be for my 18th, but I will be able to start having them prior to that.

Well I suppose I'm talking more about desirable for me, what I like basically. There is quite a few cars I like for this price range actually, but a lot of them will just cost to much to insure.

My shortlist is as follows:

Spitfire
Defender/SIII
Old range rover
old disco
and I'm just starting to look at some of the cars that Jonny69 mentions, such as the MG Midget.

I can't really decide what would be more fun though, going off road probably once a month, or having a car that would be really great to drive on road, and great for the summer (the spitfire). I guess I'll have a better idea when I start driving.

The spitefire and midget are going to be pure misery in the winter. You'd be better off with a mini, fun to drive, look great and cheap to insure.

Try a couple of quotes for a 205 1.6 gti or mk2 golf gti/driver. Both cars are considered classics, will be great fun to drive and they'll be practical.

I know I'm really fussy for a first time driver but I don't really like any of the Minis I can afford, there all the more modern ones, and they don't really do anything for me. I'm kind of hooked on the spitfire now to be honest anyway. Why do you say the Spit will be pure misery in the winter? I'm guessing because it would be colder than a proper hard top car, but I guess I could get a hard top eventually.

the 205 and Golf both cost about £100 more to insure than the spitfire, and to be honest I don't really like either, and all the ones I've seen have been ruined by some chav. I live in a very high risk area which is possibly why I'm getting higher quotes than other people are for small hatches.

Hang on, where did Old Disco spring from? Where does that fit in? It's not a classic, its not an icon, its nothing, its just... a banger? It's not even eligable for classic insurance and they are in reasonably high insurance groups.
