I have a dilemma..

I have had one boarding lesson and sucked big time but hey it was just one lesson.

Now I have a group of mates who can board and a gf who can ski. A son who is nearly 5 and would only be allowed to ski not board.

I want to learn properly how to ski or board but not sure which to choose !! I live in Hemel Hempstead and we have a new indoor snowslope opening in a month or so and want to make use of that before hopefully booking my first winter sports holiday next year.

So folks, to ski or to board, THAT is the question...

Skiing is better - I've done both. Boarding is a bit easier on off piste if you're a beginner but skiing is better for everything else.

tray riding is easier aparently so maybe you should stick at that? But then again, give skiing a go, it might be that you have a nack for it. Who knows.

Wooooooot! Im going skiing tomorrow! Yey, Meribel, just looked at the webcams and the weather, and it looks like they are getting a bit of a dumping at the mo! GET IN!

Snow boarding without doubt :)
Did skiiing for years and switched to snow boarding and much prefer it.

Why though ?

I guess it was a new challenge to start with. I had got to a level at skiing where it was all run of the mill stuff - I do really enjoy blades though!

First few days boarding you do spend some time on your ass but after that it's great fun!
I look at people skiing now in there tight outfits and just seems like it's all old men or nerds :p

Run of the mill stuff? Blades!!! lol You're doing it wrong! :D

I dont know what the attraction is with blades. Why dont you just go ice skating?

I did skiing for several years, then had a go at boarding and I haven't gone back. For me boarding is more comfortable, feels more natural and I find I have more fun at a slower pace on a board than on skis.

What I mean is it was not really challenging as I wanted it to be anymore, I had done it since the age of 4! Was not gonna start entering competitions or anything and not really gonna try flips :(
So switched and learned boarding and love it - but as others have said each to their own and to be fair I think both are awesome fun!
Blades are brilliant :D not as fast obviously but for crashing around, some off piste action - great stuff!

The attraction is freedom of movement. I can out maenouever a (non-professional) skiier any day of the week on my blades, and they are by far and a way better in a snowpark.

I see the merits of both, and I much prefer wide skis for going off piste in powder than I do on my blades (although I'll cope fine on the blades, much to the disbelief of people around me).

Snowboarding to me holds no purpose though. They are not as maenouverable either on or off piste, they are bloody awful on the flat (lots of runs that traverse mountains going from village to village, peak to peak), and they aren't as graceful or even as co-ordinated in a snowpark.

As was said above, snowboarding seems to be more about the "image" than the enjoyment. Although that seems to be changing too, as there seem to be less and less boarders these days.

for me snowboarding you just push snow about and it can be a little boring... and you know if you fall its really going to hurt. I learnt to snowboard by just renting a board and boots and basically throwing myself down red runs for a day... which worked and im now a confident snowboarder. But I would prefer to ski... way more fun you can go a lot faster and is just all round better (imo)
