Whether you agree with war or not, the death of a young person is a tragic thing. It's even more tragic when that death occours when that young man or woman is killed in action fighting in a country thousands of miles from home in a war that many believe that they shouldn't be involved with in the first place.
Now I'm not here to stand on my soapbox and say whether or not we should be fighting in any war that doesn't immediatly threaten our shores...however, i'm here to say thanks to the people of Wooton Basset in Wiltshire.
Every time a fallen soldier comes home, he or she is flown into RAF Lyneham - the body is then driven to a mortuary and passes through Wootton Basset on route. Every time this happens, the people of the village line the streets of the route and remove their hats and bow their heads to pay their respects to Britains fallen.
The stretch of road between RAF Lyneham and the village is currently B3102. The people of the village want to get that changed officially to Highway Of Heroes in homage to the brave young men and woman that fall in far away countries.
They have started a petition to help get this done - you can do your bit by adding your name here. http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/HOMAGE/
No matter what your feelings on war anywhere, we owe the people of this small village a debt of gratitude for showing their respects to the fallen - they've never met them, but it doesn't stop them.
Thanks for looking and if you took the time to fill in the petition, you have my gratitude...
Brian
