Killzone 2 Demo - First impressions

yeah you're probably right

the fov is a bit weird (as has been mentioned) sorta zoomed in. Maybe to make you feel you are right in the thick of teh action. Really looking forward to this release now actually - as i dont think i will be seeing long distance auto rifle sniping. (to me the way the fov is it restricts your vision when moving about) I expect lots of rifle butt in the face melee combat :D

The controls are finally starting to click with me, I had about a 4 hours session playing on the demo yesterday and I'm now starting to have a feel for them, and I've also realized something, this demo was a very very good idea as anyone that is having an issue with the controls you can use this demo to get some good practice in so when the game is released you can jump right in and enjoy it feeling more comfortable.

Now anyone else that is having a problem with the controls listen up, I was one of the biggest moaners when it can to how the controls felt in this demo, really I was, but practise makes perfect, just keep playing though the demo again and again and slowly on each go you'll naturally start becoming acclimatized with the 'weight' of the controls and how the aiming feels.

The big thing for me was getting used to not pushing the analogue stick around too sharply, being gentle with it helps a lot, otherwise your just going to continually overshoot your targets, the slow acceleration arc isn't so bad once you get used it, you can use that slower acceleration arc to gently refine your shots, it works quite well.

This game is definitely not a 'twitch shooter', I've heard loads of people say it but it just wasn't sinking in, tbh the more I play the demo the more it feels like Fear 1 to me, but with a cover system, slow down, take your time on shots, be a bit more methodical and this demo is very rewarding.

Anyway for those finding the controls 'sluggish', 'laggy' or whatever terminology you choose to describe them, just keep playing, it will click in the end, it took a long time for me, I've been moaning about the controls all over the place and TBH I feel quite stupid now, but at the same time I'm glad I persevered because now I know I have a game I can look forward to and not worry about how the controls feel.

One last thing, I did pop COD4 on after my session on KZ2 and I'm not putting down the controls on COD4 one bit but they did feel really strange, (try it out yourself after a few goes on the KZ2 demo), I see what people mean now when they say 'floaty' controls, it's weird, they do kind of feel unnatural lol, was a funny feeling, you don't feel like you have a body, it's like your just a camera and you can move the around environment at speed, and jumping was strange as well, I'm so used to bending my knees now and then jumping.

I agree, it does take time for some to get used to the controls and when they click it all comes apparent what GG are trying to do. Most people who had issue with the controls have seem to adapted to it now because its not like playing COD4 or other twitch run n gun FPS games.

Every time i play this the better my aiming becomes. Managed to get my hands on the semi-auto rifle; what a lovely piece of head popping weaponry.

Mirrors Edge influences in the view/movement methinks ;)

If you mean what I think you mean I agree, take jumping for example, people on the net have been moaning saying that there is jump lag lol, but you'll notice when you hit 'x' to jump sev (the character you play) bends he's knees first and then jumps, also you'll notice when you jump off a high ledge sev bends his knees even more upon landing to soften the impact like you would in real life, little things like that are so awesome, when I went back to jumping in COD4 I honestly felt like I was a bouncing camera lol.

Played the demo through twice. Short and sweet, looking forward to release.

The demo didn't quite suck me in compared to the first time I played Gears of War, CoD 4 or Dead Space but I think it's because I played the full games of them and not a demo.

Probably because you knew the demo wasn't going to last so you didn't bother getting into it. It happens to me as well with demos and full games.

I still don't see the point in controls that it takes time to get used to as opposed to all the other shooters out there with controls that don't feel like they have inbuilt lag and the world's slowest turning circle.

If it doesn't click for you then that's too bad.

Just managed to play the demo this morning, and I LOVE IT. Took a few play throughs to get accustomed to the difference in feel to the game. But now i think I'm ready for the full game.

There is a difference to other games, But it makes you feel like you're controlling a character with weight, and a pack, and a heavy gun. Rather than playing a game where the character floats, and weighs nothing, and carries guns made from foam. :P

Because perhaps most other games just make you feel as a disembodied eye with one arm and a gun and no substance on the world. KZ2 simply attempts to rectify that by making you feel you are much more than a camera with some crosshairs. Im not saying its something very clever, but something that should be normal to us but isnt (just like when we got physics into games)...

The question you really should be asking is how those kind of games got away with it for so long...

EDIT: Standard 2 is my fav now - just like fire on R2 for some reason (blame Res2 :p) - finding aiming to be too easy though...

ps3ud0

im using alternate 2 atm - crouching + zoom and shoot is hard though but i really like having zoom on L1 (hold to zoom) rather than R3 basically because i prefer to do hold to zoom and cant do that on R3 and shoot on R1 at the same time!

yep - another few things i would have loved to see in the game (maybe it is in?) to add to the realism....

1. Explosions nearby deafen you and throw your character about 10 feet away so you almost literally feel the explosion NOW THAT WOULD ROCK! :D

b) Camera would also rock about when explosion is close to give the impression of your guy struggling to stay on his feet.

c) Sortof added to the ragdoll physics - but being thrown about and being able to shoot on your back if youve been meleed from behind (e.g. when someone melees you from behind you fall down and perhaps onto your back still holding gun and blind fire whoevers attacking? or is that too RAMBO-esque?

d) Explosions and Melee - ripping your main weapon from your hands so you hve to rely on knife or pistol.

e) 18 version mode - blood n guts, legs missing, shoot in eye.. blood everywhere everybody screaming (though the screaming guy on fire in the demo was a nice touch) basically explosions should be ripping people apart and you should be able to find soldiers hiding in a corner rocking back and forth mumbling over and over to themselves "i wanna play fifa now.. i wanna play fifa now plz" :D

2. Jumping and falling - maybe 1 in 20 chance that you fall/stumble and your face slaps into the mud and you drop your rifle when jumping or trying to do something really athletic ? (your ai team8s laugh at you when this happens)

3. Your AI comrades being affected by the blood and death and you having option to go up to them and scream and slap their faces to bring them to their senses

Jesus I hope you never ever get a job in games develepment.
