Hey guys,

My other half wants to go and see a show in London. We saw the Lion King in New York a while back and so I'm thinking a big musical. The only one that springs to mind (thanks to the posters all over the Tube) is Chicago.

Has anyone seen it? Is it any good? Or alternatively can anyone recommend another large London show?

I've only seen the film version of Chicago but apparently the stage version is very good.

Personally I would suggest Wicked as I have seen that a couple of times now, in London and New York, and enjoyed it both times.

The only two musicals I've seen are the lion king and chicago and the lion king was by far the best. Chicago was a bit meh for me.

It's fantastic mate. The cambridge theatre is quite cosy but it adds to the whole thing really. I went just as Suzanne Shaw finished her run and the new girl (can't remember her name off hand ) was superb.

Blood brothers is my GF's faveourite musical....if thats an help.

Just can't understand what she see's in them, films have better acting, stories, locations, sound, lighting and direction.

I can recommend Chicago, although it's not my favourite. There's also Dirty Dancing, Grease, Avenue Q, Joseph, Phantom and Les Mis...all good.

My personal recommendations are Mamma Mia (brilliant), Jersey Boys and We Will Rock You....all great fun.

Les Mis is truly epic, but quite intense and fairly long - still, probably one of the best musicals on at the moment IMHO.

Blood brothers is also good.

I'm not really a 'show' kinda person (I generally hate musicals with a passion) but was bought tickets for Avenue Q for my birthday.

I can't remember laughing so much for years, it was ace!

I've seen Fame, The Lion King (twice) and Billy Elliot in the West End and all of them were fantastic. The Lion King was by far the best but I was also really impressed with Billy Elliot. I want to go over and see Oliver but i'm guessing tickets would be quite difficult to get since it's only just started. The next time I spot some bargain flights I might head over for a day or 2.

We just been to see the 'traveling' version of West Side Story at Mayflower southampton... as much as I'm a bloke and usually only do 'bloke' things I actually enjoyed it :)

Certainly better than 42nd street..

One of the most disappointing shows I've ever seen was Billy Elliot. Stilted and badly acted. These shows have different casts at different times and any show depends on how good the cast is on that particular night.

One of the major factors in our enjoyment of Mamma Mia (in particular) was that the cast was having a great time, and it showed. The audience does play a large part in this, and all the best shows I've been to have had very responsive audiences. We actively now try to respond as early as possible, easier in a group, and we find people around us following our lead. Generally helps the evening.

Les Mis is awesome, although it is really intense. Mamma Mia and Fame are good suggestions of lighter entertainment. If you want something older, Joseph, Grease and Phantom are all in London at the moment.

It might be worth looking through Ticketmaster to see what's on, then trying to find clips on youtube, as that way you'd get an idea if something was your style of show.
