New iPhone on the way...what does this mean?

I've got 5 pages of apps on mine, much the same as kainz, as do most of my iPhone using friends. Yes we could manage the same with a symbian, but then it wouldn't have the great user interface of the iPhone! Something most people making comparisons seem to forget.

Sounds like you are not a normal iPhone user tbh and as such are probably in a small minority. Granted I don't know too many people with iPhones or iPod Touch, but you have like 100 apps on yours!!! Most people do not even have 100 apps on their main computers let alone iPhone.

I suspect you would not have 100 if you had to pay for them ala appstore :)

The kind of apps you listed, maybe a windows smartphone would be more up your street as it can do a lot of stuff u have added, by default.

I think the point he's making in a roundabout way is that the list of things he says he uses isn't exactly that exotic, most of the stuff are things that could (and perhaps should) be on the phone by default, and the only reason they aren't is purely Apples draconian "we know what you want better than you do" policy.

EDIT: beaten

Where is this news? Ive never seen anything apart from macrumor stuff about code in the firmware.

Of course if they go by standards of a change a year then i guess its due around June.

Theyve really gotta up the ante regarding the phone, cos i love my 3G one, i aint too fussed about video calls and all that jazz, copy and paste wont make me change my mind either.

Im hoping the let down of Januarys conference will allow Apple to deliver the goods regarding decent Iphone and Imacs!

There are a few things they can do to 'up the ante'.

Offering individual features such as MMS, Video recording and so on is good but being able to run background several processes very smoothly (something I don't think the current hardware is capable of) is hopefully what they'll lean towards.

There is a great MMS software feature on the apps store, it downloads your MMS as soon as youy open the app , i.e when you get the o2 text message. Works perfectly everytime. Works like an emial client. You can send photo messages but you have to add credit which costs. seperate from 02 i think, just type in MMS in itunes store and find the red icon that looks like a SMS icon!

Ive heard about this running background processes. Will this be useful? Im not sure it will be, obviously people have different motives of rthe phone. But for the time being, my faviour feature is unlimited interent ability. I sworly miss flash! thats one thing i think adobe is sorting out, im sure a lot of these feaures can be solved with Firmware upgrades rather than brand new spanking Iphones.

PS the iphone nano was a myth, apple would never sell their sole for a cheaper dusted down version! They even say so themselves. No point putting all that effort in. And what could they take out exactly??

So this MMS app on the store, i dont have to pay to receive MMS's with it?

Whats the 'proceadure' as it were if i were to receive an MMS with it?

When you receive the text from O2 saying you have a photomessage, just load up the application, and click in Inbox, then receive MMS. The photo and message is then downloaded straight to your phone.

The setup is quite easy, on first open you just enter your number and password (as per website) once only, i havent sent an mms but like i say you have to add credits on, there is a feature for you to snap a picture to a message live.

Just download it and give it a whirl, though im hoping in th enext major firmware release that they have already done this.

My iPhone is jailbroken, there are certain apps that just make it more useful. Being able to SSH into the phone is a major advantage as I can stick things like PDF's onto the disk and read them later with the Docs app. Also I can change all of the sounds on the phone such as the SMS and Email tones which is a huge advantage for me. Other apps I use include mxTube to download youtube videos and save them to the phone, safari download plug to download files and the copy and paste addon (very useful).

You can also tether your iPhone via USB or Wifi once jailbroken, ideal for browsing on your notebook/netbook when there is no wifi around.

Rob, how do you go about changing the SMS tones, it something on the phone I've never liked.

Cheers :D
  1. You need to have jailbroken the iPhone and installed SSH on it (via Cydia/Installer).
  2. Download the latest beta of Audacity along with the FFMPEG libraries on the site (this allows you to export as AIFF).
  3. Load your track/sound into Audacity and make sure it is no longer than 3 seconds long. Additionally use the Effect > Ampilfy to increase the volume of the sound before saving.
  4. Export as AIFF.
  5. Change the filename to sms-receivedX.caf where X is number 1 - 6 depending on which SMS tone you want to replace (don't worry, we'll back the old one up).
  6. Download the FileZilla client.
  7. Make sure the iPhone is connected to Wifi, either adhoc to your computer or via an access point on the same network as your computer.
  8. Run FileZilla and open an SFTP connection to the iPhone using the following details:
Hostname: 192.168.1.X (look it up from the iPhone settings, it will be different)
    Username: root
    Password: alpine (default)
    Port: 22 (SFTP)
  9. The initial connection can take a minute or two as the iPhone needs to generate the cryptographic SSH keys during it's first use. Make sure the phone doesn't go to sleep (lock itself) or temporarily turn sleep mode off.
  10. You will get a message about an unknown host key, press okay (it just means FileZilla doesn't have a copy of the SSH keys for the iPhone)
  11. Once connected, browse to the following directory on the iPhone /System/Library/Audio/UISounds
  12. In this folder you will find the sounds for most things such as email and locks
  13. Locate the file sms-receivedX.caf and rename it to sms-receivedX.ca_ (this will be your backup.
  14. Upload the new file into this directory.
  15. You may need to reboot the iPhone in some cases if the sound doesn't work immediatly, most of the time just reloading the settings will work.
  16. If it still doesn't work then there may be a problem with the sound (may to too big or too long), try a different one.

Here is an SMS tone from my iPhone if you want something to play around with that you know works (it is the Spy from TF2 saying "Peekaboo!"):

http://rotunda.comoj.com/sms-received6.zip (Zipped)
http://rotunda.comoj.com/sms-received6.caf (AIFF)

Are you using PDANet to do this?

I've used a few programs, 3Proxy with wifi seems to work fine but with USB tether you only need SSH on the iPhone but you need iPhone Tunnel Suite on your computer (Windows. Not sure if there is a OS X program that does the same, I suspect there is. Wifi tehter on OS X is really easy, you just create an Adhoc network and change the proxy settings in the browser to use the iPhone.
