Hey Guys,

I plan on buying 100 units from a supplier in China. They sell to me ex vat right? When it comes into the port in the UK say Felixstowe then I just pay the customs and excise duty but not VAT on it, is that right? I am not VAT registered.

You pay the VAT to HMRC on import.

Edit: This applies to most products but some are outside the scope of VAT and zero rated. So it depends what it is.

Your threads are very odd dvdbunny. I can't help but read them, and yet, every time I do I feel like I'm virtually smashing my face into concrete. That's quite an achievement.

Maybe you should put that in your book?

Yes you'll pay the VAT, and the postage, and the import tax and a handling fee....bare in mind that the VAT is on top of all of those things....

If its a cake its vat free if its a biscuit then you gotta pay VAT.

other way round ;)

And DVDbunny, you'll have to pay for Shipping, and you'll pay import tax AND value added tax AND vat on your shipping. oh, and you'll also have to pay a handling fee by Parcelfarce

You will pay import tax which i think is 5% and also then VAT on the total value of the order and then a administrators fee. This will usually be paid by giro a week or 2 later if DHL are used , and fedEX expect you to pay the day your item is delivered.

Many thanks for your replies guys

I have decided to get back into the import/export business. I used to import commodities and well the way that works is nothing like importing consumer products. Which is what I would like to do now. I have given it a lot of thought.

I want to become a distributor and I have quite a fair amount of money lying around from selling a few things. I don't want to jump in but I have found an interesting new product that has just come on the market. It's being manufactured in China and I believe the UK could benefit from it greatly.

As far as I know as a distributor you do not need to pay VAT, I will sell to a re seller EX vat and then he would charge VAT to the customer. Isn't that right?
