Is there anyway of knowing whether somebody has bought thier Lord title?

Somebody has asked me to find out if there is anyway I can check if some guy is a proper Lord or not.

Do they have "Property of New Labour" branded on their arse? If so, then there's a damn good chance they bought it.

www.thepeerage.com has almost everyone. Awfully designed site so go onto google, type in the name followed by 'site:thepeerage.com'

Also go to a library and pick up a copy of People of Today, Who's Who etc.

Burke's peerage is the definitive guide on the aristocracy. They print hard copies, also available at any major library.
Full title: Burke's Peerage Baronetage & Knightage, 107th Edition: Clan Chiefs, Scottish Feudal Barons (Burke's Peerage, Baronetage and Knightage)
Or you can search for people here http://www.burkes-peerage.net/ but you have to subscribe to view the actual records.

Most titles will also be on wikipedia because there exist a large number of eccentrics who are obsessed with the aristocracy.

You'll be able to find out the lineage of anyone titled and hence deduce how long it has been in the family. It will also tell you for what it was issued and usually by whom (i.e. which monarch)

I just vomitted a little bit at that site. Worst site design ever.

Anyway, to the OP, sounds like an interesting story behind this?

He's a really nice guy, I emailed him because he had spelt my brother's name wrong. Invited me to his house in NZ! Wee bit creepy, but he's just an eccentric.

UCAS is a real laugh, the list of titles in the dropdown box is a joke, Admiral is one I remember. If you were an admiral why in gods name would you be applying for UCAS, and even if you were, surely they could just let you type your title in instead of having a dropdown box full of every title under the sun.

You cant buy a "Lord" title (unless you pay directly into a labour account).
You can buy a "Laird" title, which is the Scottish equivalent to lord, because it applies to anybody who is a landowner.

Actually, im not sure you can even buy a Laird title anymore? Anybody know?

lol...just checked for my surname (Swords) on thepeerage.com and it appears that my family aren't aristocracy, but the Sword (singular) family are.

Lord Sword....lolz.
