Hi all, long time OCUK customer first time poster.

I've just puchased the a new phenom 2 940, 4gb ocz reaper and Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H mobo and i'm really happy with it.

Initialy the my old proc and mem was the bottleneck to my 8800 but now the 8800 is the bottle neck to my proc (irony in action there).

Any way i'm looking for a new graphics card and i'm torn between the XFX 4870 1GB (stock model) or the Zotac nvidia 260 (stock). and I'd like to know which gonna give me the best performance, be quiet and still reasonably cool. I'm not really interested in doing a multi card set-up despite having a crossfire mobo.

Obviously the nvidia cards have the bonus of physx but i'm wondering if thats as much of a plus as you would expect.

Any other ideas of cards that are in a comparable price range, really don't want to go over £200 though.

I know there are many other similar questions but would be great to hear from people with similar setups

I'd personally go for the 260. I have recently switched from a GTX 260 (192sp) to a GTX 280. I overclocked the 260 to 710 on the core, linked shader and 1250 memory. I put in my GTX 280 running stock (XFX XT speeds) and quick FC2 benchmark showed about 6 FPS improvement and about 3 FPS in Crysis.

So basically, its well within reason to get the 260 running at 280 performance, considering the 4870 1GB is deemed behind the 280 and cannot come close to matching the GTX 260's OCing potential, it would be an easy choice for me. Just stay clear from the 512MB 4870 (if you are 1680x1050 or above) as that was atrocious for me:p

By no means would you be disappointed with the 4870, and yeah, it will still beat the 260 in some cases but minimum framerates tend to be better with the 260.

yeah, board doesnt matter, as long as it has more than x4 lanes it should be fine i think

i assumed you were going to sell your card, but its a great idea, i think 4xxx are cheaper to find anyway and by keeping the 8800 th 260 loses the biggest extra it has, physx support (which may or may not prove to be important)

The 4870 1gb is the cheapest out of the 2, has more momory, and is around same performance, but if you want cool and quiet, the go for the 260. :)

If your going to use your 8800 as a dedicated physx card then make sure your Power supply can handle the additional GPU, otherwise big problems.

I went from a 8800GTS 320 to GTX280 an as a said before yes it was an upgrade but no way was worth the money maybe wait for the new ati cards. As for using it as a dedicated physx card the cost to the psu plus the extra system heat far out weighs there current support in games imo.
