Rarely visit this section but thought I would ask some opinions.

Currently drive an ST220 (04 Plate), its only done 31k and has never broke in the 3 years Ive had it, but I'm a bit bored and thinking of changing it.

Would the aforementioned MPS be a good step-up?

I wouldnt say it was a step up, more of a step across. The 6 is only slightly faster and has a similar spec to the ST.

I agree with panthro - while somewhat different, they're cars on a similar level.

If you can tell us your budget we can help you with which BMW to buy :)

Pros: Faster car, nicer interior imo, less common car, no longer own a mondeo.

Cons: You'd lose the hatchback which is a shame, theoretically more to go wrong with it being turbocharged too etc.

About £8000 on top of ST PX value would be my max.

Hehe, used to have a 330ci before the ST220, then my daughter arrived and the wife said she needed a bigger car (I have a company car) so the ST220 was a nice trade off in terms of performance / space.

Now looking for something of a similar size definitely not smaller with perhaps a bit more kick. The 5 series is just not an option as the Mrs hates them and the 3 series is not big enough for her, essentially taking any beemer off the menu.

3 series saloon is the same size as a Mondeo isn't it?

Not in the back it aint, already checked one out. Rear leg room is very important (to the wife) and the 3 series saloon had none, compared the Mondeo that is..!!

An E46 3 is about 10" shorter than a MK.3 Mondeo.

Trouble is you aren't going to find a 3 with more poke than an ST220 short of an M3, which'll be too small as an E46 and too expensive as an E90. Next step is 540/M5, but that's out of the question due to irrational hated :( ;) :p

Edit: What kind of driver are you? You prefer the real twisties or high speed Gs? As I'm thinking maybe... Jag S-Type R?

Have not even considered a Jag tbh so the might be a good shout. More of straight line G's man really if I'm honest.

What you looking at get PX for the ST?

And can you not just re educate your wife? :)

Well she'll be the main driver of it unfortunately. I understand her point on the 3 series but she just thinks the 5 series is ugly.
How can I argue with with that, its her opinion and she's entitled to it. Its wrong mind you but she's entitled to it all the same.

So I've got to look for something that we both like and the MPS fitted into that.

Would perhaps be hoping for £3500 - £4000 px

I would say the interior is nicer in the mondeo than the 6, but each to their own.

The MPS will offer nothing more or less than the ST220

Dare I say check out the Vectra VXR [280]? Many ST220 owners who moved to the VXR are very happy with their decision to do so.

Can you show me some of these many ST220 owners, and please omit those who have recently been sectioned under the Mental Health Act. Thanks!

I expected this statement from a few. If you're brave and I really, really dare you, join the VXR Online forum and hear from real ST220 owners who went with VXR's. You'll be surprised.

one thing to note, can you live without the foldable back seats ?

the 6 MPS is not only available only in saloon, but the rear seats are fixed to a re-inforced bulkhead to aid structural strength.

If you every find yourself carrying big loads ( and i think most family men will) i can be a big inconvenience. I would have had a 6 MPS were it not for this.

Also, as already said. The MPS is only slightly faster than the ST220, definately a step sidewards.

Cheers for that vital piece of info bud. Foldable backseats are pretty much a must and just shows how naive I am as I'd presumed all cars these days would have them.

That pretty much rules out the MPS then. Damn women and their requirements :p

i know i was gutted when i turned up to view one.

Read around some reviews, and it was done to aid handling. Apparently the MPS is over twice as stiff as the base model. When they've gone to that extreme, i can understand why.

Shame it ruins what would have been a very practical family car though.
