WD colours

Looking at the list of WD drives ocuk sell it's rather confusing because slower (5400rpm over 7200rpm) drives and lower cache (8, 16 and 32mb) arent always cheaper, so i'm trying to find out if it has something to do with the various versions of colour.

greens are low power, and either blue or black are designed for Raid I think? not sure what the other means
In marketing speak the blues are the "everyday" drives, blacks are the "performance" ones. In real terms the 3.5" blues have 16Mb of cache, the blacks have 32Mb.

They have the same grouping for laptop drives except the blues are the 5400rpm ones and the blacks are the 7200 rpm ones.

Greens are for "lower" power consumption, and are the slowest. Blue's are quick but the blacks are slightly faster.

Damnit, beaten.

The reason I ask is i'm looking for a drive to stick in my Shuttle as the current one is dying. I was originally looking at the Samsung F1s but as they have issues with having to flash the firmware for them to work at sata 1 I started looking at the WD drives.

Also what is Scorpio, the Scorpio black 160gb 16mb cache are the same price as the caviar black 500gb 32mb cache ?

I personally would go for the 640GB blue as its only £2 more, unfortunately its not in stock atm. I remember seeing the 640GB BLACK bench marked in the HDD bench thread and when comparing it to my 640GB Blue's (in RAID 1 though), it was barely faster (as in about 1-2MB faster max).

I guess the 500GB black would be the same though so £2 more for an extra 140GB seems worth it to me.

i'm looking more for a quick drive than storage space, 500GB is way more than i need as it is as i use the machine purely for testing
