Pancake Day is on Tuesday 24 February 2009

So who is going to make a some pancake mix and pig out on pancakes.

My favourite filling is some sugar or jam.

Its also the start of Lent, anybody giving up anything.

I am giving up Alcohol its perfect timing as I will be able to start drinking on my birthday. :D

Lent, in some Christian denominations, is the forty-day-long liturgical season of fasting and prayer before Easter.[1] The forty days represent the time Jesus spent in the desert, where according to the Bible he endured temptation by Satan.[2] Different churches calculate the forty days differently.

Yes we will be having many many pancakes, in fact i will probably eat so many that i feel ill afterwards.

I really enjoy a nice savoury pancake such as chilli or curry, closely followed by 5 or 6 with lemon and sugar on.

Other favourites include:

Golden Syrup

Maple syrup

Nutella

I'm sure in true student tradition we'll end up putting vodka/similar horrible substance into ours!

Ahh pancake day, one of my favorite holidays! expect pictures of my successful pancakes guys. Not bragging (much) but I make awesome pancakes!

Wrap Aero in pancake, wait for 20 seconds. Consume gooey mess, repeat until rolling around on the floor making groaning noises.

Purge.

Repeat.

Regret nothing.

I've lived in the UK for 3 years now and I still don't understand pancake day.
Why are pancakes a once a year thing here but back in Canada, you can get them year round from almost anywhere? All restaurants serve them for breakfast (even most fastfood places such as McDonalds).

I've also never heard of putting anything other than syrup and/or whipped cream and/or fruit on them. Where did the lemon juice thing come from?

Also, aren't your pancakes more like crepes, whereas Canadian/American pancakes are really quite thick?

The recipe I use:

140g/5oz plain four
pinch of salt
1 free range egg
300ml/ half pint milk water mix (I just use skimmed milk)
30g/1oz butter, melted
groundnut oil or clarified butter for frying.

Put the flour and salt in a bowl. Beak in the egg and add a little of the milk mix. Beat to a smooth paste, then pour in the rest of the milk and water mix and the melted butter. Beat well to make a smooth, creamy batter. Allow to rest for half an hour or so.

Heat pan (~9 inch) and brush with your oil/butter. And the rest is obvious. I like mine nice and thin.

Serve with lemon and sugar, golden syrup, or cherries in syrup from a jar.
