I'm sure everybody has one or two... A lyric that gives them a certain smile everytime they hear it...

For me it's from Snow Patrol - Set The Fire To The Third Bar:

As drunken men find flaws in science

I cannot put my finger on it, and it looks terribly desperate now that I've typed it up all lonely by itself, but that simple sentence seems to say a lot... I guess because it's so true!

Let's hear yours :)

Dan.

Northern State - Sucka Mofo contains the pure awesomeness of a line "Oh yo gonna be, spinning like rotisserie". I don't see how you can fail to love a group that throws something quite so random yet apposite into a song.

There's doubtless more for me but that was the first one to come to mind.

I sold my medal,
It paid a bill.

An unusually prosaic couplet from Manic Street Preachers' La Tristesse Durera; eight small words - and only nine syllables - but with the power to evoke the bemusement, despair, anger and resignation of a war veteran who feels betrayed by the very country he once proudly offered his life to defend.

sorry its big but, the italic lyrics need context!

kurt weill/brecht - what keeps mankind alive

You gentlemen who think you have a mission
To purge us of the seven deadly sins
Should first sort out the basic food position
Then start your preaching, that's where it begins

You lot who preach restraint and watch your waist as well
Should learn, for once, the way the world is run
However much you twist or whatever lies that you tell
Food is the first thing, morals follow on

So first make sure that those who are now starving
Get proper helpings when we all start carving
What keeps mankind alive?

What keeps mankind alive?
The fact that millions are daily tortured
Stifled, punished, silenced and oppressed
Mankind can keep alive thanks to its brilliance
In keeping its humanity repressed
And for once you must try not to shriek the facts
Mankind is kept alive by bestial acts

piaf's french original of heaven have mercy
"misericorde! misericorde!"

"its blood from broken hearts that writes the words to every song" - i love you but you're green, pete doherty

"up the morning" babyshambles (very subtle but in context i hear in it the supreme expression of britain)

"the world is not my own, im just passing through, come on up to the house" "come down off the cross we can use the wood" tom waits - come on up to the house

"the devil knows the bible like the back of his hand" tom waits - misery is the river of the world

"I see a red rose blooming, on another man's vine" - another man's vine - tom waits again

id like to add some old irish songs, but no particular lyrics stick out. songs are some of the best i know tho, raglan road + night visiting song performed by luke kelly and dublinners

Pretty much any part of Round Here by the Counting Crows:

Step out the front door like a ghost into the fog where no-one notices the contrast in white on white.
In between the moon and you, angels get a better view of the crumbling difference between wrong and right.

Moving Mountains - Lights & Shapes

Slide to me
Your skin against my own
Your flesh against my bone
And all I ever wanted to feel was connection
And all I ever wanted to feel was redemption
If you walk right through that door you'll watch me fade away

or

Moving Mountains - 8105

I may not say everything that's on my mind
I am in the earth
It's where you'll find me
You're in the sky
From you

or

Tool - Ænima

**** smiley glad-hands,
With hidden agendas.
**** these dysfunctional,
Insecure actresses.

Learn to swim.

Cuz I'm praying for rain
And I'm praying for tidal waves
I wanna see the ground give way.
I wanna watch it all go down.
Mum please flush it all away.
I wanna see it go right in and down.
I wanna watch it go right in.
Watch you flush it all away.

Sorry hard to choose lyrics that impress me lol :)

Iron Maiden - Two minutes to midnight

"We oil the jaws of the war machine and feed it with our babies"

Brilliant.

Nothing ever happens

Post office clerks put up signs saying position closed
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
Janitors padlock the gates
For security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show

And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Gentlemen time please, you know we can't serve anymore
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go
And by five o'clock everything's dead
And every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college lab

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there
The Martians could land in the carpark and no one would care
Close-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same video every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
Just survive constant action replay

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Bill hoardings advertise products that nobody needs
While angry from Manchester writes to complain about
All the repeats on T.V.
And computer terminals report some gains
On the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs
For the price of a hospital wing

Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
Nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock
And we'll all go along like before

And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Live forever -Oasis

Maybe I just want to fly
I want to live I don't want to die
Maybe I just want to breath
Maybe I just don't believe
Maybe you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever

and

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I want to be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why
I think you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever

'I've started so I'll finish'? :D

Lol haha. The lyrics of Mastermind/The Masterplan though are pretty damn good.

I'm always impressed by Rock n Roll Star, words of ambition, youth and grandeur, just perfect for Oasis at the time and for me growing up listening to it.

"There's the open gate, where's the fortune that we saved?"

UNKLE - Heaven, from End Stories

Actually - that's quite depressing. Personally these never fail to make me sing along:

Woke up, got out of bed
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup
And looking up, i noticed i was late
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke
Somebody spoke and i went into a dream
Ah

I read the news today oh, boy
Four thousand holes in blackburn, lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the albert hall
I'd love to turn you on
