What would you do?

I knew you'd come along and agree with me at least in principle.

I have to say the deal he's been offered isn't exactly sensational. I'd not want to part with £6.6k for a thrashed around town by a mobile hairdresser Toyota Celica. If it was that or the Corsa, sure, but if he wants to change his car to a Celica there are IMHO better ways of doing it.

Knowing the history of the car is good, means you can decide whether to buy it or not. Knowing the history of this car I'd leave it well alone for the OMG LOW MILEAGE WOW club to snap up..

That’s basically what I was getting at, that a lot for the car part ex offer or not. I think it was me I'd spend less on a car that was better value (but more hassle). My link was just to prove that there are better value Celica's out there, imo. Buy your Mums for £6K and it will prob loose the best part of £3K over three years and c. 40K miles. The one I linked will cost the same as the depreciation you’re going to experience with your mums.

I know you could say "OMG running costs on a 120K car", cars break and things need replacing on cars that’s life. The chance of the 120K car going wrong over a 20K car is far outweighed by the saving, unless of course you get a dog, again that’s life you obviously have to look into the car before you buy it to minimize the chance of this.

If you like your mum’s car go for it. If your mums is going to give it to you on the cheap (i.e. your not going to pay her for at least some of it) then even better.

Yeah but he's already expressed that he thinks an 03 plate car is too old so he is hardly going to swap it for a celica with over 100k miles on the clock just to gain some money is he?

Exactly, and I may have missed something but there was nothing I read where the OP was actually going to have to part with cash.

edit - if I was in his shoes I would do the swap, I'm a sucker for convenience, and a nice upgrade, that, of course if its a straight swap. Being all family etc I doubt you would get down to nitty gritty of part cash part corsa etc.

I'm not to sure, it would be the same age just half the price. Tbh I don't know the guy, but I can see what you're getting at.

I'm not paying for it. I'll just be paying for the insurance (620) and private reg (250). Looks like we'll be selling the corsa privately and I assume mum will have the majority of the money earnt from that, then again she might let me keep most of it. Depends how generous she's feeling.

Can't complain then I guess.

I can't believe I even had to consider this. Had the car since Friday and it's awesome :D It actually does something in 1st gear unlike the corsa.

I can't believe people think 5 years is old, then again it's people like that who cause there to be lots of cheap 5 year old about for more sensible folk to buy.

My 18 year old Volvo is old, and even that still has at least a years life in it (which is to say it still drives and it just passed it's MOT). Probably more if I actually gave a stuff about the Volvo and didn't need to just keep it on the road until I get my next car (which itself is 16 years old)

Just been reading up on these (looking to change my car in the new few months) and i always thought they were RWD for some reason, guess not!

The older Celicas were RWD (with an AWD option I think) the newer ones became FWD (again with an AWD option). This does annoy me a bit as I have an irrational dislike of cars that look like they should be RWD but aren't (Celica, Integra, 3000GT, TT etc. etc.). I'd still have the Celica over the Corsa as I also have a perfectly rational dislike of cars that are Vauxhall Corsas.

Edit: So you own the private reg now? Do you actually want it? If not why not try and sell it, just be aware that it'll cost you £105 in DVLA fees to do so, plus 20 quid for new numberplates (or 80 quid if you go to Halfords for them) so set the price accordingly.

Last RWD Celica was pre 1986.

@ OP

"Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"

Corsa's are hateful things. They're not particularly good at anything apart from breaking down. The only thing I've driven and hated more was the Datsun Almera. Get rid of it.

Here's a quick tip - buy a car on condition, not age or mileage (unless it's a Corsa!)
