Why being an Engineer means nothing in this country

obviously this isnt what the rant is all about, but theres lots of stuck up people coming out the woodwork. Feeling they are something super because theyve studied something.

I'm sure no one here believes they are superior as a person. But in engineering its pretty much undoubtable that they are smarter than the majority of people who lack such degrees and call themselves engineers. Otherwise these degrees would be worthless.

People obviously need more serious things to worry about if they get all strung up on whether or not someone can call you an engineer or not :p

At least you spelt 'your' correctly this time. :D

My example is backwards because so is the suggestion that someone fitting central heating calling themselves an 'engineer' somehow puts wages down for bona fide engineers.

Washing machine 'engineer's dont do that, plumbers do which is fine, as they are... plumbers

^ This.

If us aeronautical engineers make one small calculation error in a critical part then people die (from what we have been told...) so I have to agree with the above.

Sorry but which part of the deisgn process of a critical part is not checked by at least 2 seniors engineers and more probably a principle engineer before being built?

I know this will sound harsh but the more people work in the Engineering industry the less the title will bother them, unless they are a pleb, I have found that people who need the title are very small minded and normally have no social skills thus need that to give them something to boast about.

It used to bother me when I was at uni but when I got into the engineering world you just get on with things and don't really have time to complain about it as you have work to do.

and run though a FEA stress analysis before shipped out for a second checkstress activity by an independant company, then the components tested to 1.5 ultimate load in a static test rig....

But at each step of that engineers are involved.

US aeronautical engineers?

Your not an aeronautical engineer your a first year student. A college course or an apprenticeship with study?

Your a trainee aircraft mechanic at the very best or a student practicing to be an aircraft mechanic :p

;)

I can tell Danny is an engineer in this thread, hes misused your just like I did :D

Although he will be none of those. Hes a first year student on a degree. Servicing and mechanics related stuff isnt part of the syllabus. Great on the course where you get the book engineers who dont know what a spanner is and ask in propulsion lectures what a bearing is though.

But would the engineer call in another engineer who is less qualified and will have the responsibility of installing the bolts ;):D:D

I can't believe how big this thread has become, and is quite a funny read with some pretty rubbish choice of words from some people.

I'm going back to being an engineer in a non-engineering department... Well for the next 2 weeks before I move placement :p
