Hi

Has anyone happened to compared the Panasonic's BD35 Blu-Ray player against the PS3's Blu-Ray drive, if so which player
produces the very best high definition PQ with Blu-Ray disc's?

I apologise if this question has been asked before, as im a newcomer when it comes to Blu-Ray.

Thanks

I think it's just down to what processing each applies before sending the data over the HDMI cable.

If both passed untouched 1080p over HDMI then they *should* be identical....but I doubt this is the case ;)

To be honest it depends what you want it for? If you only want to watch movies get the Panasonic, if you want to stream media and play games you may as well get a PS3. Just my opinion! But if you use the PS3 the BR remote for it is excellent and far easier than using a controller.

I compared the two on my 1080p projector. With BD, I really struggled to see any difference.
With SD-DVD, I did think that the BD35 was a little better, not IMO enough to justify the expense, but hey, that's just me.
One additional thought though is that different people seem to have different levels of sensitivity to differences in picture quality. Whilst I'm fairly picking on video, I get the impression that others are more sensitive on visuals.

The panasonic bd35 can be made region free for DVD using a remote hack. It can also be made region free for blu ray using a chip mod. The PS3 can not. The BD35 is quieter than the PS3. The bd35 uses a standard IR remote and thus you can remap everything to say a harmony one. The PS3 uses bluetooth and you cant (without buying extras). The picture quality of both is pretty much the same, but IMO the bd35 loads discs faster than the PS3 but its marginal. So as a blu ray player I see no advantage of a PS3.

I think now its unfair to make comparisons between the PS3 and standalone players now.

With the current pricing of the standalones no one would buy a PS3 purely for bluray playback.

I was thinking this for cinema room, Should I get a standalone or PS3 in the end I went for a Ps3 as I figure it will be nice to play the odd game.

That and the fact it was 160 quid from MM :D

I bought a PS3 last February and love it for BD playback and the streaming capabilities. I have actually used it to stream things much more than play Blu-rays. Couldn't live without it now.

The answer: both produce the same PQ, but the BD35 is over 100 quid cheaper than the PS3 for blu playback

same quality for blu ray, but PS3 has tons more to offer (hard drive, games, wireless connection, streaming etc...). Furthermore PS3 prices are rumored to come down so may be worth waiting.

Sweeping statement tbh.

The BD35 is 100 quid cheaper because it just plays BD.

Its a BD player.

The PS3 is a game's console that plays BD.

Whats your point again?

Who would buy a PS3 purely for BD playback anyway?

Im trying to work out what you mean by this? :)

I have a 50" Pioneer, and I couldnt see much difference in the PQ to be fair, but I upgraded to a BD35 for the ability to bitstream HD audio to my amp, and Im very happy with the choice

I do get very frustrated with how long it takes to load a disc though, the ps3 can load/eject in about 10 seconds (and its just as fast from off) every stand alone hd deck Ive ever seen /tried (hd-dvd and bd) apart from this takes an absolute age to eject the disc tray

something so simple shouldnt take an age to do

Sorry, my mistake. What I meant to say was that I'm fairly picky on the audio side of things, whilst I think that others are perhaps more sensitive on differences in visuals

Yep, the PS3 is still unbeaten for this :)

personally, i wouldn't buy a product like a BD player or any other piece of Hi-fi equiptment based on it's speed of ejection.

If the sound/video quality is superior (Which the BD35 is) and is also cheaper (again, bd335 is) then the only reason the buy a ps3 is if you want a games console too.

another to consider is the sony 350......which is very close to the bd35 too.

that is an opinion but not a fact. Blu Ray is the same and will play the same on both. There is no quality difference - 1080p is 1080p / DTS master audio is DTS master audio. Your monitor and amp/speakers will make the difference in quality not the player.

The only difference you will find in players is DVD upscaling, how many audio formats it can decode, profile 2.0, bitstreaming HD, audio CD playback, functionality, loading times etc.... There will be no quality difference when it comes to Blu Ray, even if you take the top of the range Sony BDP S5000Es or the Pioneer BDPLX91. Even Kingfat (one of the AV forums BDP player gurus) aknowleged this, when I asked if he could see/hear the difference in a "blind" test.
