Had new front disks and pads fitted in January. It's been a month and a half now and the front disks are showing clear signs of rusting. Is this normal? They rust that quickly? Will it hinder my stopping distance?

It's normal if they've got wet while the car has been standing. It'll disappear the first time you use the brakes

They rust within hours of being stood still. the rust will disappear after you dab the brakes..

if the rust is there after you've been using the car that's different.

Bare metal will always rust, most peoples brakes are rusty unless they have zinc plated disks which can stop the edges rusting. Contact will always rust when not in use.

Erm, they're steel. Steel rusts.

The rust will probably be gone as soon as you apply the brakes.

edit: lol beaten x 3

If they're just rusty while the car is standing, don't worry it's normal. Check them when you've come back from a run, they should be clean.

afaik discs rust within just a few hours as they are made of iron

i know some discs come from factory with plating (nickel) to stop them rusting on shelf, then you have to wear this off disc carefully with organic pads to avoid loading your pads with it.. after this 'wear in' period you can then switch to sintered pads.

the above deffo applies with bikes (EBC disks), but not sure about cars, maybe they put a thin film of something else on disc rather than plate... assume it must be similar

my disks are rusty near the hub, not the area where the pads hit. Look really really bad, do you think its a good idea to wire brush and apply hammerite or similar?

no

the outer edge can rust as much as it wants

That bit doesnt effect braking performance, so just leave it be.

I sprayed mine with stone chip and two years on still looks black as opposed to the original rust colour ;) I did all four and took about a day to do....

wire brushed it down cleaned with a meths rag and sprayed didnt bother about masking off the disks, just was carefull not to load it on) I did remove the wheel BTW.

bullit

you could oil them to stop rust :p

Nah, the oil would wash off too easily and he would have to do it almost every day. Go to a local motor factors and get some copper grease. A liberal application will definitely last the lifetime of the car.:D
