Upgrading to Vista 64bit, quick question - any point in getting 8 gigs of ram over 4? With memory so cheap these days doesnt really make a difference cost wise, just wondered if now or in the next year or two having 8 gigs would be of any benefit whatsoever?

Depends what apps you use and if they can use more than 4Gb.

Photoshop (CS4) runs like a dream with 8Gb, as soon as it's cheap enough I'll up mine to 16Gb

I'd say it cant hurt, i'd bet you'd be paying less than £40 for another 4gb if you are going down DDR2 route, so go for it. Vista is very memory hungry, 4gb runs no problem, but if your thinking future proof go for it. Depends how much you are willing to spend though, maybe look at DDR3 if you really want future proof, but then that could mean new mobo etc

I love having 8gb, vista is very snappy, uses 1.5gb at idle for superfetch and the like, it rocks.

Seen crysis and such drive ram over 5 or 6 gb.

To the peeps who already have 8Gig of RAM with Vista.. what have you set your pagefile size to?

I just installed another 4Gig to bring my machine up to 8Gig.

I have a system managed pagefile in it's own partition on a serparate physical hard drive.

When I had 4Gig RAM Vista set the pagefile to roughly 4Gig. Now I've installed 8Gig RAM, Vista has set this to 8Gig... surely it doesn't need that much

Was thinking of setting a fixed pagefile of 2 or 4 Gig.. what do you reckon?

Sorry for hijacking this thread btw

I set it to nothing.

Until I had some programs complain at me, when I upped it to just above the minimum.

Much better to write to ram than the HDD.

I'm an other one that seen a nice improvement from 4 to 8GB. I had to use Windows 7 32 bit a few weeks ago and 4GB of RAM felt horrible with my normal daily usage, I do a lot of multitasking which felt slow and sluggish with only 3GB of available RAM.

I have been meaning to mess with my pagefile since I got 8GB but I keep forgetting. I think I'll do it tonight, I'm gonna try and install the lastest build of windows 7 which is rumored to be the release candidate.

Just ordered my Titan Vulcan.

Planning to get the extra 4GB of ram maybe in a months time. DDR3 Ram as well which rocks!

Planning on getting 8GB myself soon - unfortunately I have 4x1GB sticks at the moment so I'll need to buy all 8Gb together.

Still, only about £65 for 4x2GB and it'll give me a decent performance boost, especially when running Windows 7/Vista under VMWare ;)
