Drakensang : The Dark Eye Bags Best RPG 2008

That was NWN 1. :p

Oooh, no it wasn't. NWN1 was dreadful, the original campaign at least. BG had a fantastic story, loads of decent sub quests with interesting plots. NWN had 'catch the magical creatures, so we can mash them up for a potion. And try to ignore the really obvious bad guy who's going to betray everyone in a few hours.'

In fact after BG2, NWN was possibly the biggest disappointment I've even had in a game.

NWN 1 was awesome, I lost count of the hours I put into the multiplayer (probably a primary cause for my current RSI, all joking apart, but I was young and stupid then).

I agree it wasn't up to BG 1 and 2 standards (that's impossible, BG had me creaming in my proverbial pants) but it was still a damn fine game in it's own right.

On the flip side, I never completed NWN 2, that was an abortion of a game in comparison... Obsidian suck and ruin just about every major franchise they are given (imo)...

Yeah, I loaded up up NWN 2 the other night, since I'd gotten a new graphics card since the last time I tried it. Lasted about 3 minutes before getting annoyed all over again with the camera and exiting :p

.

I spent far too much time developing and maintaining/running a persistent world for NWN... destroyed my sleep pattern

This looks like it could be good, or at least I'll give it a try and I'll will it to be good as this is my favourite genre of game and there aren't enough of them! (Party based RPGs that is)

I thought NWN2 was a a LOT better than NWN1, I'd say the opposite that NWN1 was the abortion :p I am hoping that they can take the format of the Storm of Zehir add-on and make a NWN3, if they can write a good story it will be the closest to BG3D we've had yet. Nothing ever lives up to BG though and I've given up thinking anything ever will.

You can have parties in Oblivion with the right mods.

Check out many of the custom-made companions, including Mr Bean, Cpt Jean Luc Picard, and the main cast of Lord of the Rings. :p

Looks like 2009 is going to be a good year for party based rpgs. Drakensang and Dragon Age as well. Enjoying the demo so far. The voice acting isn't great but fortunately they shut up after the first lines of dialogue :p

Edit: found 16:10 aspect now, thought it only ran in 16:9

Nice demo , graphically its very nice and the quests / inventory / menu screens are easy to use and go through. No wonder it won those German RPG awards :D :D

Only thing i don't like is the camera , seems i can't set it up to scroll when the mouse cursor is on the edges of the screen nor can i get the camera to follow my character , if using mouse click character go to area. It does follow the character if i move him via the Keyboard. Oh well still looks lush though , i'll get the full version for sure!

Thread resurrection - this is showing as end of march release on one of the major online shops now. Mate of mine has played through the german version and reckons it's well worth a look.

You can buy it now through GamersGate, I did :D

Took a while to download though as their speeds don't seem as good as Impulse or even Steam.

Been playing it a fair bit the last 2 days and I reallly like it. It's what you'd call a true party RPG in the sense its got that Baldur's Gate/NWN2, feel to it. Even reminds me of The Witcher in some ways. Bit of a mixture of a few types really, however the TDE system is nice. I like it more then the D&D system they used in NWN2. Feels more intuitive and the storyline is refreshing in that its not the same old hero saves the world kinda thing.

The graphics are quite good (English version comes with the Hi-Res texture pack). About 20 different classes to choose from, crafting has been fun so far and the the quests are nice and varied. Dialogue is quite involved although no real chioces & consequences so far. Voice acting is mostly fine. Its not fully voiced though, usually just the first few lines.

Overall, quite a good solid RPG....you could do a lot worse than this :) It gives me the same feeling I had when I first played The Witcher, average start but builds up quite nicely and is getting better all the time as you get into the plot.

Graphics look alright.

D&D style.....getting old already.

What the hell is wrong with simple and easy to understand RPG elements?

Little revival. I figured this was the closest we have to an official thread.

I've downloaded the official demo off the website and am trying to do a couple of quests. Thing is, my character is refusing to attack people... He is currently stuck in a fight against 4 rats taking 0 damage from every attack :p. No attack animation, no damage registered. I take it this isn't normal?

Edit: Nailed it. Turns out I was using a weapon I didn't have any points in.

so far not particularly impressed, the "dialogue" system is irritating as hell, boring, no voices and utterly bland, not a hint of wit, humour, inteligence or complexity.

Combat seems, odd, to say the least, your companion won't seemingly follow you automatically until you select all, then you start a fight, move your ranged guy away and your hand to hand runs with you meaning you're still the same distance away. Its just all a bit, gay, at the moment. Bland, no real character to the game, maybe thats just the starter area. Quite nice graphics but thats about it so far. Stats system is horribly laid out for something that should really be very simple in all honesty.

I'd also said its funny that surfer got so upset at the mention of generic rpg fantasy settings as so far their appears to be both Wizards to kill(mages) and seems like theirs a prophecy aswell though might be wrong on that. it doesn't feel remotely complex so far though. Characters with the depth and dialogue of a doormat so far kills depth for rpg's.
