Got pulled for having a headlight out, fail

i find the worst are brake lights, i only ever seam to find out when some one drives behind me. Either that or when i reverse up to a wall.

It's harder to notice on some cars though, due to the lights being out of the way, and, well, behind you. :p

I've always been able to spot if a headlight is out or aligned incorrectly due to the lack of light, I don't get how people can't spot it.

Thats the problem, its just not chavs anymore, all sorts of people get into their car and switch on every damn light they can find:p

Personally front fogs dont bother me, rear fogs and 1 headlight out peeps bother me more.

Actually, I have seen the odd oldie in their CRV or whatever they drive with their front fogs on. :p

The passenger side bulb went in my car a few months ago and I never noticed till the security guard in the works car park told me, said it had been out for quite some time. Maybe with modern days lights they are so bright that people just don't notice?

On my wifes car every time I drive it at night I have to get out and check that the headlights are working as they are that bad. :)

It's not as bad as what I did once. Just put the gearbox back into the Dolomite. I forgot to take a picture where the wires to the gearbox went. Well it meant it was wired up wrong, didn't realise til a friend told me. I had overdrive and reverse mixed up, this meant when I reversed I could have potentially gone into overdrive (and quickly destroy my gearbox), plus whenever I went into 3rd or 4th gear my reverse lights came on! I did wonder why people always backed off when I went into higher gears...

Out of interest, don't any of the cars mentioned here have a method of telling you that a bulb has gone?

I thought it was now quite a common feature on most cars, especially newer ones.

Yep, it's called the windscreen. If it looks slightly dimmer on the one side in front the bulb is out. Worked for me for over 20 years.:D

A lot of those systems require that you fit OEM bulbs or they report a failure.

The failed bulb light on my Volvo has been on for about 3 months yet all the lights are working fine. I don't think it requires Volvo bulbs I just think the system is broken due to the age of the car and increased resistance in the wiring.

People that use their fogs to make up for having a light out need to die, damn chavs. You see it so much in Liverpool :(

You know that quite a few cars less than 10 years old have a feature that automatically puts a front fog light on on one side if a headlamp has gone?

I only noticed mine out yesterday after a friend pointed it out to me. It could have been gone for 5 minutes or 5 days.

Does this make me a bad person?

Should I hand myself over to the police?

Nah, only hand yourself in if you have headlights actually missing like this :

:D

it makes sense. obviously not to use it for ages, but if it goes on a journey, fog lights would let other people know that you werent a bike, for a start.

I find it so annoying how difficult it is to change the bulbs on some cars these days :( You'd think it should be one of the easiest bits of car "maintenance" to do, especially as you're supposed to carry spares and swap faulty bulbs over ASAP in many European countries.

Total nightmare on my Avensis. Ok if you have hands the size of Jeremy Beadles, but nigh on impossible for most adults.
Even the dealer and owners forums say that a lot of people need to remove the bumper to change the bulbs.
I've managed it, but had no skin left on my knockles afterwards.

very easy on my almera.

i got charged £5 to have my sheet stamped just after christmas for my exhaust, they stuck it up on the ramp and everything :)

Have to admit my saab has a disagreement with cheap brake light bulbs, it used to keep shouting about brake-light failure. Never had any issue with head lamps though. I just thought that it was odd that most people needed to actually look for a failed bulb by noticing dark patches at night. Perhaps only the swedish cars, and a few others have it as a feature.

Both my Volvos have had it (a 1990 460 and a 1991 940) I'm aware that some BMWs have it (and allegedly require BMW bulbs for it to work properly), other than that I've never encountered the blub warning system, none of my company cars I've had have had it (all VAG cars) and my 1999 Subaru Legacy didn't have it either.

I don't think it's common. I can see why the Sweedish cars would have it because it's dark a lot of the time there, hence the daytime running lights.
