To balance out the negativity of the disappointment game thread (Fridays should be positive!), what single game this year actually managed to impress when you were sure it'd fail?

Mine is definitely Mirror's Edge.

Valkyria Chronicles; i expected it to be pretty good, what i actually got was one of the best games i've played in years.

Mirror's Edge, although just like Gears of War, after loving the first run through, I just can't bring myself to play it anymore :(

Ah the time trials are awesome! Just as much fun and playtime as the main game itself, definitely worth playing through, they're so addictive!
Have you tried the free DLC time trial map?

I'm really going to have to get this, I do like RPG's and I've heard nothing but good things about this game.

Mirror's Edge :)
Managed to keep my attention for the 2 weeks I was home for the holidays :) Haven't had a game do that in a long time!!!

People thought Mirrors Edge would fail?

I thought COD WaW SP would be average, but found it enjoyable.

Fallout 3

didnt know anything about it. not really my kinda game. hated oblivion however 120hrs on im still playing it and have now started on oblivion and spent 20 hours on that too.

CoD WAW; i was expecting it to be just a skinned CoD4 (which to be fair, it was) but i was also expecting it to be a bit crappier as a result of treyarch being in the driving seat, i wasn't even going to buy it but for the suggestion of a friend and it's better than 4 in my opinion (probably only because i like the setting more), i've certainly got more than my monies worth and it's one of the only games in years i haven't sold within a month of completing the single player :p

Saints Row 2. I didnt think it would fail, but I also didnt think it would be as much fun as it was :)

I thought FEAR2 was pretty decent, i played the first one and thought it was ok-ish but the second one was pretty decent...much better than the first one. I found it a bit more creepier than the first one.

MotorStorm Pacific Rift. After playing the shoddy demo I honestly thought the game would completely fail but Im seriously loving the game atm.

Gears 2 was a lot better than I thought as well! I didnt think it would fail I just loved it a hell of a lot more than Id imagined as I got bored of Gears 1 pretty quickly for some reason.

Dead Space and Fallout 3, both games i bought in the supermarket just cos and ended up enjoying them both.

Too Human -Thought the demo was appalling but for some reason rented it anyway and played through it in a few days and really enjoying it.

Braid - Heard so much praise, thought the trial was ok but was blown away by the full game, superb.

Street Fighter 4 - I don't do fighting games but this grabbed my attention and right up until I actually played I still though I would hate it. I'm more surprised how much I like it rather than how good it turned out to be.

Mirror's Edge? I guess if you like looking at walls and air vents then it's quite good.

I don't think I was surprised by any games, I was surprised that soul calibur 4 made me play so much!
