***This Week Only - XFX ATI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB GDDR5 £164.99 inc VAT ***

Was thinking about one of these, although I'm not in a huge rush and will see what/ if any new prices come along. :)

Th Rebate support on this product ends on Friday so once the stock runs through the prices will be going up.

bought a chunk of ram and vista to support it as well. I read the XFX has a flickering issue which can be fixed via a bios update on the website, so make sure you register when you get yours. I cant see prices dropping to the point i'll kick myself, should be an improvement over my 8800GTS 320 anyway :)

****BAHHHH I forgot about the free delivery option for forum members. Bah again ***

I have just ordered one of these cards to replace my BFG 8800GT I was going to go for the BFG 260 OCX but I could justify the extra cost involved.

However this is my first ATI card, I have always been Nvidia. So I'm wondering if someone could tell me the best way of swapping this over. What to do first.

Is it?

1) Download ATI Driver, which one? and whats this Bios upgrade to stop flashing (card that is) ???
1) Add Remove Programs and remove Nvidia driver
2) Turn off and remove and install new card
3) Reboot and install new downloaded driver

Is that right? Main concern is sorting this Bios thing and which version of the driver?

Flashing only happens apparently some of the time and seems to be an issue with certain OS's, but if you are unlucky enough for it to affect you its a simple bios update from the website.

Theres a good prog out the called driver wiper or something, for my purposes though im reinstalliong the OS which will ensure getting rid of all the drivers. Ah found it, links on removing drivers from the half-life forums, presume thats allowable?

Cheers, So I roughly had the steps right but just missed the driver cleaner. Does anyone know the link for the BIOS flash of the XFX or more info?

Don't bother with driversweper or drivercleaner, these just cause problems.

Just use the uninstall function from add/remove progs.

My card just arrived from the painfully chirpy DHL chappy, now need to get home. One slight problem:

"This card bundle includes a free copy of 'Company of Heroes' game and is complete with a full 2 year warranty."

Taken from the product description but isn't in the box. i had a look at the XFX site and it doesn't appear to be a token or download thing - so where's my game FATBOY! ;)

Edit: AceModder has sent me a copy - thanks!

Nicely on time for the Amd price cuts.:p

Indeed. I have been stung by OcUK sales patter before, bought a boggo 6800GS at the "best price probably never repeated". The next week a BFG one came on 30 bucks less.
Always been bitter about that one! :p

As said I'm personally not in a rush to upgrade; only if something really is unmissable.

At another retailer you won't get anywhere near the speed of the free delivery here ;). They do have a better range though, but the problem is where to draw the line with spending extra. I started looking at a Saphirre 512mb for £145, then a Powercolour 512mb with a quieter cooler and a slight overclock for £150, then I noticed this for £165 with faster delivery and more RAM, then another £7 will get the Powercolour OC version, then another £6 will get you the XFX OC Version with faster RAM and an extra 5Mhz on the GPU out the box. Then there are price reductions due iminently, along with the 4890, arrrgh, my head is going to explode. Why did I sell my 4850 this week???

Indeed wait to see what happens with the prices, im waiting for the new cards to be realeased should bump them down a bit more too.

selling older cards before new ones come in is the smart thing to do.

The best way to keep the "value" of your parts is to buy 2-3weeks after launch when you find stock at somewhere not gouging the price, then sell 2-3 weeks before new parts launch and they devalue massively.

hold on with something else as backup, then buy the new thing when its out, or buy a almost certainly decently dropped in price 1gb 4870. Its HIGHLY unlikely the current 4870 1gb price is where it will end up when the new cards are out, its just the price that increases sales to drop as much inventory as quickly as possible before the new cards are released, when they are trying to ditch the last stocks with new cards out they'll drop further for sure.

The 4850 will devalue massively even more so if the new 40nm overclocks very well with better stock cooling as it seems it will have. So 4850 1gb's could be ridiculously cheap.
