In what way is a passenger ride a test drive?

lol fair comment.

I initially just wrote "Had a test drive of an RX8" but when typing it out I dicided to post about the ST220 aswell. Just stuck St220 in the title :p but ye ur right, it wasnt a test drive...more an experiance...

Driving with one foot resting lightly on the clutch pedal. It means the clutch tends to slip slightly all the time, and wears out pretty quickly. It also lessens control and is generally a Bad Thing.

OH! Is that what it is? Oops. No, I dont do that. lol I was told by my instructor (or he said stop riding the clutch when I did it) was when for example, approaching a round about from a distance I would put my clutch in and leave it down until we stop or at a speed when we needed to start moving again...

Also had someone drive me about in an ST220 (dodgeyest setup I have ever done in my like) rang up the company "errmm, yep, meet us here in 30 mins"..."oookkkkkk". Arrived and there was just this random dude (not the guy on the phone) stood in an empty back alley parking area. He took us out and litterally RAGGED THE **** OUT OF IT. I went with a mate and we were both just like . He did 80mph in 30mph winedy residential street going up hill. When we got out the he said "First time ive drove this car was today, HAHA". I dont think ive ever feared for my like as much as today. Got to say the cosmetics of the ST were pretty bad (scratches all over, alloys were shagged) but the engine and performance of the thing was EXTREMELY impressive...(although it was drove by a mad man) Ill deffonatly be looking at a better example of one of these in the future (and get a test drive :p)

Made me laugh :p

Anyways just thought Id share my day and see what everyone else has to say about it :)

Your ST220 experience sounds a bit like mine with the Octavia. The owner took me out in it and drove it hard (but sympathetically, pootling around for 15 minutes until it was warm, cooling it down for a couple of miles etc.) Now when I say he drove it hard, he obviously knew the roads well but I was sat with my face going :D:eek::D:eek::D:eek::D ... the whole time!

Even after nearly 2 years I haven't been able to get that much out of it and thats one of the nagging reasons stopping me from modding it, I need to get a feel for what I've already got before I try and improve it.

Thats coasting, not as bad but still not good practice. I do it too much too :o

Try an old Scania. ;)

I hope you know how to use it properly now!

Sime, you must go through clutches like pints of milk.a\\\\\\\\1

End bit was from my 1 year old :)

lol!

But i made a mistake! I coast not ride the clutch! My insturctor taught me the terminologies wrong!

and no, the clutch has never gone in any of the cars ive had so far so i cant be driving it too badly :p

The RX8 def had a problem, one of things they get you to do on the prodrive day is emergency break from high speed with your hands off the steering wheel.. it goes as straight as a die and the electronics take care of everything.

That one had a serious problem because one thing you can't say about an RX is that it feels unstable around a bend.

Just to make this clear... "riding the clutch" = letting it slip on hills/slopes and things like that. When you see a car at some traffic lights and it is constantly moving slightly forward then slightly back then slightly forward again it means they're just riding the clutch and not doing it very well either!

I always remind myself on this forum that no matter what random pieces of information I know (in this case about old Scanias) someone here will know more :p :D

IMHO the best thing about this forum is the absolutely staggering knowledge base it can draw upon. Once you've learned to filter out the dross you can pickup a lot and I don't know about you but there are a good few members whose threads/posts I tend to make a beeline for as they're always a good read.

Oh I agree, the knowledge hidden within these forums is indeed staggering, I always make time to read certain peoples posts...and others I just cba with.

There are some people who can always make me laugh, and some which always annoy me....either way, keeps me browsing them.

There are people here with whom I am almost always at loggerheads on every issue, but that doesn't mean I don't respect them or take no notice of their opinion. The jellyheads who post complete bilge are a different story, however ;)

With a 13 speed fuller? ;)

Scania have a compact range of their own designed gearboxes; on earlier vehicles, based around a 5 speed gearbox(!) with options of a splitter or range change to give a 10 speed variant. The improved GR900 9 speed and the GRS900 14 speed transmissions are currently being introduced to the Scania R-Series HGVs and coaches. :)

Wheres me anorak!

I only mentioned because I know the gearbox in one of Dads lorries is called a 13 speed fuller!

You'd love it actually, let me find a picture of it.

Best pic I have of it at the minute, it sounds awesome though
