Ok I know I will get slated for A: buying new (my first one ever) and B: 'cos a lot of ya don't like Fiat's, but what the hell, I do :p
I previously had an Alfa 156, but she was getting on and I decided to change her as she was gonna start costing, (cambelt and 72k service, and a few other consumables that were on the way).
We had 4 years of trouble free motoring from the Alfa, and decided to keep with the Italian theme :)

This time we went for economy, practicality (with 2 young kids) and (In the opinion of the wife and I) one of the best looking small cars.
TBH finding the same engine and spec on a year old example is both scarce and not overly attractive price wise compared to the deal we got.

So the new little bambino is the Grande Punto Dynamic 1.3 Mjet:

practicality? I wouldnt want anything less than a normal sized hatch if i had 2 kids. That would be far too small for my liking.

economy?
why have you purchased new when economy was on your mind?

you like it though, so i guess thats all that matters.

I would have liked Leather, but at £750 option, TBH wasn't worth it on the price of the car, its got a nice sober black and grey interior, not some of the ... err... brighter colour options ;)

Economy being the MPG and Tax, lower insurance. Yes somewhat undone by depreciation, but we plan to keep it a while.
Just as much room in the back as the 156 TBH ... a tad more if anything.

So you spent thousands of pounds to avoid bills of a few hundred pounds :p

Enjoy the car, personally I would not have gone for that colour.

10100 OTR including the alloys, (optional extras on that model) and a couple of other extras thrown in free as well as a full tank.
TBH coulda got it a bit less from internet sites, but would rather see someone face to face when spending that sort of money.

Lopez: Spending as much as the car is worth isnt good economy either :p

So Vogon, how many years until the tax/mpg/insurance of the new fiat punto offsets the difference in thousands of pounds to buy new and p/x the Alfa?

Would have been much better financially to replaced the Alfa with something more sensible at the same price or less.

You guys realise he could well have decided to get something new and economical as opposed to something new which he would be spending more on as time goes by?

The terms new and economical are not mutually exclusive.

If his/her first requirement was that the car be brand new, then that's all irrelevant.

Financialy it would be better to buy a pushbike, thats not the issue.
No matter what car (with the exception of rare exotica) they are never a good investment.
Why buy another second hand car that would start costing me again soon ?
This car has 5 Year warranty, so I only have to worry about servicing and normal wear and tear items for that period.

Everytime I insure and tax the car its less outlay, it will do a lot more MPG than the 156 so I will be visiting the fuel stations less frequently, to me thats when I notice the cost of running a car. The cost of buying the car, for me, is treated the same way as buying a new TV, PC gear, or whatever.

The argument is as broad as its long, and I dont intend to sit here and justify why I bought the car, I did 'cos its what I wanted ;)

If you don't like it, thats your perogative, but I didn't post to start a debate on financial soundness !

I like, mainly as I was going to buy a new one as well, but bought a new clio instead. although I do like it in three door form but as you have kids it's not that great, but I just make mine struggle in to the back seats, there just as much room back there as the five door version.

I like new cars, had a fair few now. and will always buy new if I can afford it..

bullit

Don't let these muppets have a go at you. Good on you for buying new, it's nice to have a brand new car that no one else has had before you. The people calling you an idiot are too thrifty to know that feeling.
