Hello

As you can see I have a EVGA 680i. I recently bought a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo and a Gigabit switch from netgear as well.

I currently have my PC, Readynas and xbox360 connected to the switch.

Now it will transfer at roughly 8-10Mbs. In the properties of my NIC #1 and #2 it shows the speed/duplex settings as auto detect but the max it goes up to is 100mb Full duplex. Now i know they are gigabit ports and even shows then as a 10/100/1000 but it doesn’t seem to give this option.

I run Vista Business x64 fully updated with correct drivers.

Any help would be great.

As has been said already, CAT5e is sufficient for gigabit ethernet. If you terminated the cables yourself then that could be why it is not running at gigabit speeds. 1000Mb/s requires using all 4 pairs of wires, if some of the wires are not correctly connected then it is possible that it is only using 2 properly connected pairs to run at 100Mb/s, as that speed only requires 2 pairs out of the 4.

Yes, cat6 is absolutely not required for gigabit - cat5e is definitely capable. Try some other cables, but if you do need to buy/make any more, don't bother buying cat6, you don't need it.

I actually got 2 sets of 3m CAT5e from OCUK so im guessing they are up to scratch. I have been reading a few problems with the 680i + vista and getting the gigabit speeds so I will do a bit more research into this.

Bin the switch.

Seriously, i've had one and two other people i know have had one, they are awful - many times refusing to link at gigabit - for no reason - with good cards (Intel Pro/1000). With other odd problems like it would not link at gigabit in Solaris but does in windows. Or only link at gigabit when the machine was plugged in and the switch rebooted.

As soon as i swapped it to a Linksys SD2008, all of these problems immediatly went away.

Hhhhhmmmm ok I seem to be getting 30-32mbs now after I enabled jumbo frames. No idea why i didnt think of that before

Also the switch seems to be working perfectly and will not be going near the bin

That's exactly what I get from my GS605. Looks like a Linksys replacement is coming soon.

Cat5e will run gigbit ethernet upto 100 meters however you are pushing it to it's limits.

That's why some people will pay the extra for cat6 for the increased headroom and reliability for Gigabit performance.

Rubbish switch, used to have one of those, terrible.

Get a NetGear GS105 5 Port Gigabit Switch couple it with some Intel PRO/1000 PT Desktop Adapter for:-

The HP 1800-8G is supposed to be a good switch and I'm happy with my NetGear GS105, get some decent CAT5E cables and PCI-E NIC's if you want things to fly along.
